So what free game will we get for enduring the Sonypocalypse?

KABOOOOOOOOOM-a-dub

I first heard about it from Game Informer, but the news is everywhere. Somehow, somebody, something done broke the PlayStation Network. Which, obviously, means network-enabled games are not going to run at the moment… but not-so-obviously means some you-thought-they-were-offline games like Heavy Rain will not boot. Duh-whoops!

While it’s back to Animal Crossing for me, I thought I’d pose the question… What awful, unloved, ancient PSN game will we all get for free for having lived through Sonypocalypse 2010? Calling All Cars? Super Rub-a-Dub? Post your picks in comments and give us a good reason why.

that horrible, horrible Elefunk crap. then again, i'd be surprised if they could even give that one away.

Sony's now saying “slim” PS3s are not having trouble at all, and that they're narrowing down the issue.

Oh, and uh, I'm betting it will be something that was already offered free at some point, like Rag Doll Kung Fu or Flow.

maybe some free content for mass… oh wait never mind.

Haw! DLC for Haze would be hilarious. Or even Lair (which was free DLC anyway, if I remember correctly.) To order to be truly awful, the free gift must not include any Trophies.

Of course, on second examination, it seems fair to expect that we won't get jack for this outage, since we're not paying for the service in the first place.

No wait! What about a FREE UNOPENED RETAIL COPY of Lair! Like, the whole game!

No but I did pay $60 on release day to play Heavy Rain, and its been down. So, yeah, I'm pissed.

  • ryvythed

Yeah, It'll be Rag Doll Kung Fu.
    You're right.

The only software I want is a patch, pronto.

  • ryvythed

it will “force-download” as part of the patch.

And here I thought only Ubisoft was using draconian DRM to only let people play a single player game if an Internet Connection was active. I guess Quantic Dream felt this was a necessity as well.

Seriously, after I heard this, I have not turned on my PS3, and probably will not do so until it is fixed. I wondered if it had something to do with the internal leap year clock, as it was perfectly timed to a possible Feb 29th, and it was resetting dates back to Dec 31st, 2009. Anyone with me on this one?

That's been a leading theory… although my PS3 was on the correct 2/28 date last night, and I could not sign in to PSN. I did not try Heavy Rain, nor did I play anything that might get me trophies that might be lost during the downtime. I watched the new Justice League blu-ray and the first episode of Caprica. And I did a data backup.

Leading theory is that it's a firmware bug in older models having to do with miscalculating leap days.
