Ones to Watch: PC Games for March 2010
Here we are in March, and I have to say that this is the busiest March I have seen in PC gaming in quite some time. I mean, this is a month where we have eight solid titles releasing for the PC, averaging out to two quality titles per week. And there is something for strategy nuts, first person shooter fanatics and even some action adventure titles to tickle that bone if it is your fancy.
As for our case mod this month, it is suppose to be similar to an MC Escher painting as the computer parts go in every direction. It is a sleek, elegant design that really looks rather interesting. I would love to do something like this in my house, but a kid and house animals prevent it. To see more of this mod, check out Geeky-Gadgets.com.
Also make sure to check out our Ones to Watch articles for Xbox 360, Playstation PSP/2/3 and the Ninteindo Wii/DS for the month of March 2010.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – This is the first time that the Bad Company franchise is coming to PC, and developer DICE has done a lot to make sure that this release is not just a hashed out port from the 360 version. DICE has maintained that dedicated servers will be available for PC gamers, as well as the ability to have a larger player count per online game. They also made sure to up the graphic level for PC gamers making the game look really good. Add in a free Limited Edition upgrade for pre-orders and you have what looks to be a solid entry for the PC with Battlefield: Bad Company franchise. Look for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on March 2nd, 2010.
Supreme Commander 2 – When Supreme Commander was released in 2007, Supreme Commander was received well, but there were some technical issues that kept it from greatness. That said, I was happy to hear that Square-Enix picked up the publishing rights for the sequel, as I felt there were some small tweaks that could be made to give SupCom2 a perfect release. About the only worry I have with this release is that it has been developed in unison with the Xbox 360 release, and we all know how poorly the first game turned out when brought to the console. Hopefully that does not rub off the opposite way. Look for Supreme Commander 2 on March 2nd, 2010.
Silent Hunter V: Battle of the Atlantic – Ubisoft has come back to the venerable Silent Hunter series and has added some new features that add a little more immersion for the title. Now you walk along the cramped passages of a German U-boat, talking to your crew, giving them praise, admonishing them or just assigning them some skill points. All of this either boosts or drops their morale, and in return their reactions to situations. Add in the return of the excellently implemented dynamic campaign, and Ubisoft looks to have another hit on their hands. Look for Silent Hunter V: Battle of the Atlantic on March 2nd, 2010.
Assassins Creed II – After a four month delay from the console release, Assassins Creed II finally comes to the PC, and with a little perk for their patience. It seems that the two DLC packages will be bundled in the PC version of the game. However, this addition will bring the cost of the PC version up to $59.99 retail. Also, we have the super wacky new DRM scheme that Ubisoft is packaging into Assassins Creed II for PC gamers that will not let the game play if you lose your connection to the Internet. I almost left the game off the list because of this, but the game is such an improvement on its predecessor that I could not leave it out solely on DRM issues. Look for Assassins Creed II on March 9th, 2010.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising – This standalone expansion pack for last year’s critically acclaimed Dawn of War II title adds in new maps, units and quests for you to work through. The expansion also continues the use of the Games for Windows LIVE system, adding in another 1000 achievement points for gamers to unlock. It is amazing that Relic continues to put together some great releases for PC gamers, and tweaking them for years after their release. That is the final feather in the cap for this title. Look for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising on March 11th, 2010.
Dragon Age: Origins Awakening Expansion – It is strange to see a new, full blown, standalone expansion pack come out for a game four months after its release. I mean, Dragon Age: Origins came out in November 2009, and gave PC gamers 60+ hours of gaming in one box, just for one of the six included origin campaigns. The new expansion will continue the story of your Grey Wardern, including importing your saved character and all the decisions made in that game. Some are sad that their favorite NPCs are not coming back in the expansion, but this does lead the way for new characters to be introduced into the series. Look for Dragon Age: Origins Awakening on March 16th, 2010.
Metro 2033 – Finally a shorter title to type out. Metro 2033 has been in development on the PC and Xbox 360 for the last three years, and has been shroud in mystery until recently. Only in early February, did we get to see some of Metro 2033, and those videos and screens were sent out with an actual release date less than a month away. The game looks to set gamers in a nuclear future where people have gone to hiding in the Russian subway system to get out of the radiation and fallout from the war. Metro 2033, will support all the new tech for PCs, including DX11. Bonus cool feature – the ability to play with spoken Russian in the game, with English subtitles. Look for Metro 2033 on March 16th, 2010.
Just Cause 2 – This was a game that had not even come close to my radar until the recently launched game trailer and the Anatomy of a Stunt trailers. After watching those, Just Cause 2 shot up the list to second on my most wanted release of March. Of course, this is a sequel, and it is following up a release that was average at best on the PC and consoles, never really standing out from any of the other Grand Theft Auto clones. By playing up the insane crazy things you can do on the island of Panau, I think Just Cause 2 may have found its niche. Look for Just Cause 2 on March 23rd, 2010.
And there you have it, an absolutely crazy list of title to choose from in the month of March, and that still leaves out a few titles that might now meet the level of greatness that these eight do. I mean we have a newly designed Command and Conquer 4, now with zero resource gathering, leaving me a little skeptical. We also have Settlers 7, which is a solid title, that unfortunately leaves me way too confused at times. And then we even have a chunk of DLC coming to Grand Theft Auto IV, in the form of Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. Make sure to come back next month for another month of PC gaming goodness for April 2010.
