Bungie sending Halo 2 out with a bang!
You may have already heard that Microsoft is stopping support for the original Xbox, including original Xbox games that work on 360. This includes Halo 2, and Bungie have decided to have ‘one last hoorah’. They say:
We’re all saddened at the realization that an era is coming to an end but looking back, we’re incredibly fortunate to have had such a great run and such strong support from our fans. Halo 2 has been at or near the top of the Xbox LIVE charts for original games since it launched over five years ago. We’re extremely thankful to everyone who has played, enjoyed and supported Halo 2 over Xbox LIVE. That said, mark your calendars now – on April 14th let’s all rally to go online for one last hoorah. One final farewell and one final opportunity for all of you to kick our asses at Halo 2.
On a personal note, I can remember the many happy hours I spent playing Halo 2 with my friends. This is a pity, but at least it’s going to go out with a bang.

In other words, it isn't profitable anymore for them…it's costing more to run their servers most likely.
I don't get why Microsoft would drop support for some of the most popular titles on their platform, regardless of whether they're last generation titles. It can't cost them that much money. I could see some people letting their Live subscriptions lapse because of this.
Well, one of the big reasons they are cutting support for Halo 2 online, is that it is the last of the old architecture in Xbox Live. It is the one game that is limiting Friends lists to 100 and other code limitations. Microsoft has said that Halo 2's online legacy code has hindered some features on Xbox live, including friends lists.
