Where Is Skype For The PS3?

Submitted by Paul Munn on January 6, 2010 – 2:47 pmComments

skype_logoSkype hit the PSP just about two years ago, so why isn’t it on the PS3? We’ve got the Playstation Eye for video chat and as a mic, we have headsets of various USB and bluetooth flavors we can use, and we have a broadband internet connection. From an economic standpoint, Sony would just cough up the cash for initial development and then run on Skype’s servers, no muss no fuss. Heck, maybe Skype would cover the costs themselves.

Yes of course the PS3 does already do video chat with other PS3’s and it works nicely, but Skype would be better. Skype would reach the millions of people that have Skype and no PS3. Skype would be another geeky bullet-point for the box right after Blu-ray, Netflix, web browsing, music streaming, and free online play. Heaven knows it has the horsepower, especially if the PSP has the horsepower to run it! And now some TVs are getting Skype.

So why don’t I have Skype on my PS3? Anybody? Bueller?

I would love to see the RSS stuff on the PS3 as well. Have it sync up and notify you when new episodes of your favorite podcasts and video casts are ready, then sync that to the PSP or another device, or play it in the background while you play. That would be pretty nice.
  • Why isn't several PSP features on the PS3? The RSS Channel, SensMe Channels, Digital Comics, etc...

If we could port over PSP Minis to PS3, why can't we bring over other little features? And Skype on the PS3 would make another nice little selling point for the system...

who knows, Maybe the'll make an announcement today or something...
