fifa2009Here’s a little games-and-violence story from sunny old Italy, “Italian teen stabs father in PlayStation row.”

A fifteen year old boy stabbed his father in the neck with a knife after dad tried to offer PlayStation gaming advice. The game in question, a birthday present, was FIFA 2009. Dad tried to give some playing tips, and then turned the TV off. The son – whose name is Mario – stabbed him, and then calmly retired to the kitchen to wash the knife. The father is recovering in the hospital.

The kicker is the quote from Mario’s mother:

“Mario is obsessed. He’s forever playing on his PlayStation, and we bought him FIFA 2009 because we didn’t want him playing violent games,” his mother told [Italian newspaper] Il Corriere.

More proof that there are no easy answers when gaming and violence intersect.

Well, with all that slide-tackling, I'd say FIFA and Grand Theft Auto are pretty comparable. Who ever said sports games ain't violent!?!
