Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Prey Runs out of Steam

Actually, the title’s wrong – Steam ran out of Prey. But as that’s not so snappy a title, we’ll brush over that and move on. Ahem.

Do you know how you can run out of something that isn’t tangible? No, me neither. But that’s exactly what has happened over at Steam during their holiday sale.

Prey, the 2006 story of Tommy, a “Cherokee garage mechanic stuck on a reservation going nowhere when an otherworldly crisis forces him to awaken spiritual powers from his long-forgotten birthright”, hit the sales at a staggering 80% off, retailing for just $2.25. And, as like anything else on the planet that retails for 80% off, the bargain-hunters went crazy and picked up every virtual copy Steam had, wiping the key allocation and essentially ‘selling out’ of the digital copy.

The Steam website says “Our sale on Prey was so popular we ran out of keys!! If we can get more, we’ll put it back up for sale. ”

If this isn’t just cause for that double exclamation mark, I don’t know what the hell is.

And why I am so happy I jumped on this deal five minutes after it was posted. Prey is a rather unappreciated game, and I was hoping a 2.25 price tag would make people get up and buy it. I just did not expect that many people to buy it.

Firstly, that was a great headline. Secondly, I have a feeling it was something to do with the Bioshock deal which was issued almost immidiately after. They were both 2K published games, and if you looked at some of the stuff they said regarding Bioshock, I get the feeling that they really wanted Bioshock to be the big deal, and Prey was just what they could get until they managed to wrangle the Bioshock deal. Maybe. This is pure conjecture, based on the fact that as soon as Prey 'sold out', the awesome deal on Bioshock was introduced.

Or maybe due to Prey's success, they totally sold out, and had to bring in the Bioshock deal to satisfy demand? We may never know…

I got stuck mid-way through and gave up. I got tired of it, and since then have been pretty tired of shooters overall. They gotta have special sauce to keep me interested, but I will say their portal technology popping you out all over the place was neat. I guess it pre-dates Valve's Portal game eh?
