Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was – is – a successful title. Everyone knows this – slugs know this. It’s topped the gaming sales charts for weeks on end, and not even the media fervor could dampen gamer excitement. And now Infinity Ward and Activision can boast that it’s not only a successful title, it’s now a BILLION DOLLAR title.

Let’s put that into perspective. Not only did the game gross around $550m worldwide in the first five days alone, its profits outpaced several Hollywood movies, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Dark Knight and gamer-’advocate’ James Cameron’s Avatar.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and videogame records,” says Robert Kotick, Activision Blizzard’s CEO. “There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”

“The phenomenal success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was undoubtedly one of the leading entertainment stories of the year,” adds Michael Rawlinson, Director General, Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA). “[It] firmly established videogames as one of the leading forms of entertainment in the UK.”
