Life With PlayStation As Shopping Mall

Submitted by Paul Munn on January 4, 2010 – 8:30 pmComments

Good old Folding@Home became Life With PlayStation last year, and the most recent 1.2 update made a quiet trip out from Sony’s servers a couple of weeks ago. I initially became excited at the “support for slide shows” feature mentioned in the release notes, but it took a little digging to find out that none of the channels seems to support it yet.

The other new feature in 1.2 is a PlayStation Network Game Trailers channel that lets you browse a flowing grid of trailer icons from the store and start a sort of slide show of trailers. From the full-screen display of the streamed trailer you can click through to learn more about the title and even buy it on the spot.

What’s it really need? A search option, or even channels within the channel that would allow the limiting of trailers to E-rated, T-rated, or M-rated fare to make it kid safe. Perhaps a way to show different genres of game to let them show off the latest Action or Puzzle fare? Those kinds of features would be just a bit more elbow grease on an existing software product that could yield a much better experience. Is searching really too much to ask for on what amounts to another way to browse the Store?

  • Last time I checked out the game video channel, there was only a couple dozen videos and they were all pretty old. The screen wasn't stacked with the latest and greatest PSN Store uploads, as I had expected. I thought that was pretty lame.
