Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Sony Unveil Premium PSN Subscription Plans

Submitted by on December 20, 2009 – 9:59 am8 Comments

There’s been rumours flying around for awhile, but Kotaku believe they’ve stumbled upon the strongest evidence yet that Sony are moving towards a premium PSN service.

A chart of proposed plans suggests four different subscription rates: $4.99 or $9.99 per month, or $29.99 or $69.99 per year. There’s a multitude of different options and benefits (see after the cut), but headlines include cross-game chat, loyalty programs, cloud storage of PSN info and unlimited free access to PSOne classics.

Sony state: “Sony is considering offering a premium PlayStation Network subscription in the future. The subscription offering would provide new premium features you could choose to pay for and are in addition to the features currently available for free such as access to online multiplayer gaming (current features would remain free).”

At this time there’s no evidence that these plans are firm, but more likely to be markers to gauge gamer opinion before they’re finalised and rolled out. So what do you think?

This would be awesome if were really for real, but I don't know how long I would have to look through these before I decided which one I would want the most.

I think that unlimited free access to PSOne classics would sell me. $30 a year for that? I'm totally down.

And the console war fights grow ever more granular.

The key takeaway is “current features would remain free,” because there is very little on that list that I give a fig about.

I am not against Sony charging for their service if it allows them to add new features and whatnot. People tend to forget that a lot of this development and backend infrastructure has to be paid for somehow.

Also, I wonder how long the rest would be free. There were a lot of things that were outside the Xbox Live gold Membership years ago that are now inclusive. I remember that demos were free to all, and now new demos are gold exclusive for the first week.

  • How terribly annoying.

I wouldn't partake. I don't think I could pay for another online service that would still be less-appealing (to me) than Xbox Live.
