Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Heavy Rain Won’t Kill the Mood

Ah, Heavy Rain. Is there nothing it will do in a simple, easy, straight-forward kind of way?

Guilaume de Fondaumiere – CEO of HR developers Quantic Dream – recently explained that while PS3 exclusive Heavy Rain will feature trophies, the twist is that you won’t know when, where or even what those trophies are until the close of each sizeable gaming chapter.

Talking to Kotaku, de Fondaumiere explained that in order to retain as an immersive gaming experience as possible, they’ve decided to delay them entirely in an attempt to avoid killing the mood . . . or, presumably, yourself with the distraction.

Clever? Annoying? Or thoroughly unimportant in your eyes?

Heavy Rain is scheduled for release in early 2010, exclusively for the PS3.

Boo. Another game with a ??? trophy list.

It will be spoiled and frontpaged on the internet within three days of release anyway.

  • Weretoad says:

Are you sure that's what this means? I was under the impression that you won't receive the notification that you've earned any achievements in a chapter until the end of that chapter.

    So rather than seeing

    Trophy Unlocked!
    You died 5 times.

right in the middle of gameplay, you'll see that and any others unlocked at the end of the chapter when the gameplay is over.

  • Weretoad says:

Oh and sorry if I fail at differentiating achievement/trophy lingo, I don't yet own a PS3.

  • Joe Fourhman says:

Dude! You are absolutely right. I misunderstood the aim.

Some games do this already, although it sounds like Heavy Rain will be taking it to an extreme. For example, in Katamari Forever, if you get the Collection Complete trophy (and you didn't; I did), you do not get the trophy bing when you get that last item, you get it after the level is over and you're back at the hub menu.

I think this is a great idea. I love for games to keep me as immersed as possible (damn you, Uncharted plot twists!), and I think Heavy Rain could possibly be one of the most cinematic and emotionally gripping games around.

That certainly sound like what's proposed here.

I do think it's intriguing the lengths QD will go to to preserve the gaming experience. Looks like it's shaping up to be incredible.

Whilst previewing it I watched about five different people in addition to myself play through a chapter and although key points of the story (no, not the gameplay!) were essentially on rails, not two people had the same plot/dialogue. Very interesting.

I just want to see Quantic Dream live up to the expectations of a game they create. Omikron: The Nomad Soul had promise and a great world, but was never fully realized, and muddled with too many combat techniques. It had an identity crisis, is it a shooter, a fighter or FPS? Then came Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy. Again, very stylized, with some great dialog and decision mechanics, but the game looks like the pimples on my ass, and becamed completely confused with itself at the end.

Lots of promise, but lacking in the delivery at the end of the day. I want Heavy Rain to be great, but I do worry about the promises being cashed in at the end of the day.

  • Vixx says:

Yeah. I too am hoping this won't be Death by Hype …
