I’ve no idea how many guys play as female MMO characters. In truth, I don’t really care. But apparently I’m in the minority, for Chinese MMO King of the World is intent on clamping down on female impersonation by introducing a new Gender Identity System.

No, gamers wishing to play as a female character won’t have to lift their tops (or drop their pants) to confirm their gender. The Gender Identity System scans faces via webcam and then assesses whether or not you’re female. If it turns out that you’re a guy trying to play as a female – or if you’re a woman with unfortunately manly features, presumably – you’ll be banned outright.

Bizarrely, this intrusive – and kind of offensive – step has been introduced by Aurora Technology to make ‘females feel respected’. Can you understand why a guy playing as a female character is any more ‘disrespectful’ than me choosing a male avatar when I play? No – me neither.

Nice to know that developers want to invade my personal space more and more. I am sure that everyone here knows I tend to play through games with a female character whenever I have a choice. There is something about the dialog trees and actions that are far more appealing a lot of times. I can say factually that Fallout 3 is a far more interesting game when you play as a female, because most of the inhabitants respond to you as if you are too soft to survive the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Vampire: Bloodlines is the same way, as females easily have the best dialog trees for the game.

As someone that has played MMOs as a female character, I would be a little ticked off by this. I play by the rules, and I do not go around trying to barter for “the sex”. However, this is a feature that would easily knock a game off of my list when it comes to playing. That may just be me, if Valve told me I could not be Zoey in Left 4 Dead, I might have to stop playing Valve games on the spot.
