Aeropodcast #106: Of Stones and Passage

Submitted by Joe Haygood on November 2, 2009 – 1:34 pmComments

kidneystones-main_FullThis week on the Aeropodcast, we go the community service route and explain the pain and suffering that one can have from Kidney Stones and Gall Stones.  Well, we only hit on this for a few minutes, but remember kids, drink plenty of water.

From there, we end up discussing one of the controversies that has beset Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which would be the terrorist mission.  Is it too soon for this kind of mission to be available to play in a game, or are we being too sensitive as a society?  We also look at things like Vietnam based games and other situations where gamers and deveolpers have had trouble dealing with historical events.

We also have some great stuff from the community, including a return of a regular community member, XCWarrior, who wants to know a few things.

As always, our podcast is produced by Stephen “Grandmaster Flash” Munn, and features music from Revolution Void.  You can find their music at www.revolutionvoid.com.

  • Ironically, this podcast topic was chiefly about the OTHER reason that Modern Warfare 2 might offend/annoy people. The Cole Hamels video thing was more or less erupting in real time as we were recording.
  • Have yet to listen, but as someone who had their gallbladder removed earlier this year I can confidently confirm that GALLSTONES FECKING HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURT. And that's from someone who's pushed a person out of her ... well, kinda. (He got stuck and came out the sunroof in the end ...)
  • I have a nagging gall stone that my doctor has said not to worry about if I am good with occasional pain. It only hurts after spicy food. As for Kidney stones, I have passed at least a dozen in my lifetime, including having one broken up by lithotripsy. That one was the size of a quarter and ended up breaking up into so many parts, I pissed stones for at least three months. Good times.

Yeah, I was reading about the F.A.G.S. stuff right after we finished recording, and was bummed I did not see it happen while we were recording.

Just thought I'd point something out about that Modern Warfare 2 scenario. Apparently, you're not playing as a terrorist, but a CIA agent who infiltrated the terrorist's circle of trust. However, on this mission, if you don't try to blend in, you'll be killed (I think you're discovered at the end of the mission and killed anyway, though).

Also, I'm pretty sure it's the very first "mission," although I wouldn't call it that. I would think it's really there emotionally shock the player and get them ready kick ass and really feel attached.
  • I would find it interesting if you could actually choose whether to shoot the innocents, or blow your cover and attack the terrorists. That scenario was never addressed either, and it was something I started to think about in the days after the podcast.

I think choosing to attack the terrorists would make the game 5 minutes long. Vladimir Makarov is the game's antagonist, so killing him off in the first mission would be rather depressing.
  • I may be wrong, but didn't Way of the Samurai on the PS2 allow for you to end the game within 20-30 minutes of playing it if you happened to head down that path? I know there was some PS2 game like that. Just because it would end the game early, don't not negate it as a possible path to take.

I highly doubt it because Infinity Ward has said that they want to use it to pump up the player for the rest of the game.
