Ones to Watch on PS3, PSP for October 2009
Uncharted 2 is set to dominate the fall when it hits on October 13th, already earning numerous very high marks in reviews. The multiplayer demo, out now on the Store, is not to be missed. It’s drop dead gorgeous, the various modes are quite accessible and fun, and while I’m certain I’ll be decimated by anyone and everyone just a few short days after release in the competitive modes I’ll be able to fall back on some fun co-op modes when I want to take a break from the single player action. All that and it ships with a full recording tool for post-game review and posting your best matches online. But Nathan Drake’s sophomore outing isn’t the only high-profile title coming in October to the PlayStation pantheon.
Fans of getting their patience sorely tested by dying frequently and/or cheaply (that wouldn’t be me) will want to check out Demon’s Souls (see our review) coming on the 6th. Fans of metal or Jack Black could do a whole lot worse than Double Fine’s Brutal Legend ringing in Rocktober on the 13th, a game that has many folks interested and will hopefully put the acclaimed studio on firm footing for this generation.
The latest and greatest Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time rolls in on the 27th to be the first Ratchet game bearing Trophies. Unlike Uncharted 2 this won’t have a multiplayer component but everything I’ve seen of the game looks excellent, with trailers hinting at a time-twisting plot that conveniently brings back vanquished foes from the series past. Speaking of oldies but goodies Afrika finally reaches North America with Trophies on the 6th, and the Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition comes in on the 13th now that the DLC for last fall’s post-apocalyptic masterpiece is available on the store.
The PSP gets a brand new bit of hardware on the 1st, that being the PSP Go. Trotting alongside the high-priced sliding form factor that brings 16GB of onboard storage, bluetooth audio and tethering, and a digital-only purchasing model to the same PSP hardware platform are about 100 games on the PlayStation Store. The handheld finally gets the Gran Turismo game that’s been hinted at forever as of the 1st as well, joining MotorStorm: Arctic Edge that landed on September 29th. Another new release is an old arcade favorite Thexder Neo, and don’t forget the PSP port of GTA Chinatown Wars coming in on the 20th as both a UMD and digital download.
It’s a huge month for PlayStation, and I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering how I’m going to pay for all of these wonderful toys.

The mp demo of Uncharted was only ok. The graphics were in no way drop dead gorgeous. I have no idea were you get that from. The Single player looks great, but the mp can't hold a candle to it. It looks good, but not that good. I liked the objective games more, but the controls are kinda wonky, and it doesn't help that the PS3's controller sucks fir shooters.
Ah yes, Afrika was delayed a couple weeks into this month.
I thought the demo was great myself and the graphics were really good for MP. I didn't like the aiming system but again like you said maybe that's the controller.
Looking forward to trying Afrika too!
I was impressed with the Brutal Legend demo despite my active dislike of metal music. <– UNPAID ENDORSEMENT
For me, it really comes down to 2 games: Uncharted 2, R&CF, and hopefully Brutal Legend. Those 3 will probably keep me busy until 2010.
October is all about Brutal Legend for the 360. I will be picking up Uncharted 2 as well, but Brutal Legend has so much more depth.
My top one if Afrika for a new type of experience.
Took me a while to get used to Uncharted 2's third person shooter aiming and so on in the demo. I had to start getting used to reloading manually to avoid popping a guy with the one or two bullets left in the clip and then getting ventilated by him while I reload, and it helps greatly to use L1 to aim.
The indoor map with the river running down the stairwell really impressed me visually.
Yeah, I get regularly stung by the gun kickback throwing my aim into the sky. Did the first Uncharted have auto-aim as an option?
I don't recall it being an option on Uncharted 1. In Uncharted 2 multiplayer L1 doesn't auto-aim, it just increases accuracy at the expense of mobility, and you can tell by the tightened targeting reticle.
Two games! Uncharted 2, R&CF and Bru… THREE GAMES. There are three games.
