What’s the free-to-play niche like these days? Not much of a niche anymore with the likes of Free Realms, Runes of Magic, and Dungeons & Dragons Online stomping around eating up player-hours left and right. Good old Dungeon Runners has met their match and is throwing in the towel, shutting down as of January 1st, 2010. The game wasn’t able to turn a profit and the team is down to just a few people to keep it going, so out it goes.

I tried out Dungeon Runners about two years ago and while I liked its sense of humor, poking fun at an absolutely overused and oversaturated genre is something many titles do today in varying amounts. Breaking the fourth wall is that popular. As far as content goes I would have to agree it doesn’t have a chance with casual players and the hardcore hack-and-slashers have a whole lot better fare to dine on in the free to play space.
