Dante’s Inferno: Kid Killing is Bad, Mmkay?

Dante's Inferno

Once again, Visceral Games’ Dante’s Inferno has hit the headlines. And once again, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

This time the game has caught the patently unimpressed attention of the INA – or the International Nanny Association to you and me. Via a statement at Game Politics, they’ve publicly chastised the “Bad Nanny” achievement which celebrates the destruction of a “yet undetermined number of unbaptised infants”, stating the the award was “created out of poor taste and bad judgment.”

Know what? Maybe they’re right. It probably is in poor taste. But they haven’t called it the Good Nanny achievement and – hang on, isn’t this just a video game? Isn’t this just fantasy?

“INA is opposed to video games that promote and encourage players to ‘kill’ babies, even in fantasy play,” the Association says. “It is our opinion that this type of play may promote violence towards children. The name of the trophy or achievement, ‘Bad Nanny,’ is offensive to our association in that we strive to promote and educate the public regarding the selfless work nannies do to support families by providing quality in-home child care.”

Sigh.

So let us be clear, gaming public, lest there be any confusion or ambiguity about this emotive topic. KILLING CHILDREN IS BAD. There. That should fix it.

Your thoughts?

People kill me all the time, and I'm not bothered by it. Those nannies are too uptight.

So uh who wants to hear a dead baby joke?

What's the difference between a Ferrari and a dead baby?

the car doesn't scream when you smash it?

Does anyone think they're just making the game like this to get this sort of publicity? Because if they're trying to, they're doing a great job.

    Yup!

Does anybody think they're *not* doing it this way for this sort of publicity? Next thing they'll be giving away free things to people who rename their child Turok. Er, Dante.
