Creepy As Hell Marketing Postcard

Submitted by on October 7, 2009 – 11:21 pm18 Comments

scarypostcard2-1

Today, I went down to get my mail and found this rather creepy looking postcard in my mailbox.  I have no clue as to what it is, but I do know it is from a game company, because of how I write down my address for game companies.  So, does anyone have any thoughts on what it might be.  I do see the two black dots on the back of the card, as you can see above.  Also, note the message coming from a man named William.  The postmark states it is from New York.

I thought maybe Left 4 Dead 2, or Saw, but none of those seem to fit quite right.  Bioshock 2 came into my head, but how would the postcard get from Rapture?  I do not know of a Silent Hill or other creepy game that is coming out in the near future.  DreamKiller did cross my mind from Southpeak, but it does not seem to totally fit.  Let me know what you think?

And check the jump for full size images of both the front and back to see if you can find any clues.  And yes, this card scared the f#*$ out of me at first glance.

And yet they went with the “cute” polar bear stamp.
Way to go, marketing department- PHAIL!

umm i dont think dreamkiller is from SouthPeak.

What do you mean you don't know about any upcoming Silent Hill game? Shattered Memories is coming to Wii in a few weeks! So far, the game is best known for procedurally adjusting the clothing of the lady cop (sexy or buttoned-up) based on a pre-game psychological exam.

Not that this postcard is from Silent Hill. I don't think there's a William in the SilentHilliverse. Vikki, weigh in!

Correct, Mr. F – as always. This is definitely not a Silent Hill promotion.

Hmmm. Could this be part of the Dante's Inferno weird-ass campaign?? Although that wouldn't explain why we didn't get the $200 cheque (unless you banked it on the sly, Haywood …)

I too laughed at the polar bear stamp, though. Nice touch.

A little time on google suggests it just *might* be Dementium II … But whatever the hell it is, it's kicked off interest in the gaming press!

    Polar bear makes me think…Lost?

Haha Joseph poor guy. Somehow I feel I have to apologize lol.

I actually found out this morning who it was by looking at the logs, and the title has been mentioned in these comments.

  • Jordan_Snyder

Is it Dementium? When I first saw it, I definitely thought BioShock 2.

  • Engles

It was kind of reminiscent of some of the other Bioshock marketing, wasn't it? Like that telegram, and those creepy drawings…

  • Jordan_Snyder

Yeah, if you go to their little promo site: http://www.somethinginthesea.com/home.html you can see a bunch of creepy letters, newspaper articles, etc.

They've been doing a ton of odd promotional stuff for the game, like sending out an old 45 record.

the take-two headquarters is in new york and max payne is moving out of new york in the next game see where im going with this.

  • Engles

    …what?

  • BuckM

    I may be missing something, but isn't it $.44 a stamp now-a-days?

  • http://www.aeropause.com mclazyj

For a letter, the postage is $0.44, but for a postcard, the cost is less. There is a specific postcard rate. I know far too much about the postal service. Comes from having a mother-in-law that works there.

    Check this site out: somethinginthesea.com.
A character named Mark Meltzer is on a mission to find his missing daughter, Cindy, who was kidnapped by Bioshock 2's latest antagonist, the Big Sister. If it's indeed from Bioshock 2, then there's your answer. I also suggest checking out the forms from cultofrapture.com for answers too. Good luck.

when you do marketing with postcards, it is essential that you make it attractive to the prospects so they won't feel anything strange about your opportunity. It should be something fabulous and and stunning, not creepy.
