Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

The King demands your presence for this Katamari Forever Namco remix

Katamari Forever contains an impressive pile of remixed songs from the first two Katamari games, including this sweet tune that weaves in samples from Namco classics like Pac-Man, Xevious and Mappy. Nice!

Incidentally, if you are at all concerned that Katamari Forever is not going to hold up as a full retail $50 release, I say you can pack those sorries in a sack. By my count, this PS3 exclusive has 34 levels, each with multiple modes of play… at least four mini-games… the usual sorta-flaky multiplayer levels… plus more collectibles than probably any other game in existence, for extra OCD replay power. And unlike the third-string 360 release, Beautiful Katamari, there’s no mid-level loading breaks!

Sure, a bunch of the levels are near-exact re-creations of boards from the first two games, but whatever. It’s Katamari. It’s fun no matter what you’re doing.

Now would it be horrible if I went to the store, bought the copy of Sacred 2 I'm now fighting a deadbeat seller over on eBay and this happened to fall into my cart? Oh look I'm speaking into the comment box instead of aloud to my wife. That must be why I'm still alive.

I'm excited to introduce my kids to this but they barely get enough time with LittleBigPlanet with me these days, and as their nascent platforming skills improve — it's really 2D with 3 tracks, remember — they're really enjoying it more. They both get anxious playing the KF demo because of the timers involved, but I think it might not be a terrible challenge. After all, one of them isn't getting “all the bubbles”, causing the other to pout and complain in this game.

Yeah, gun for unlocking a couple Eternal levels right away!

There are a few levels that natively lack a timer… where you have to roll until you think you have reached a size pre-agreed upon by the King. If you ignore the King's request, you can just roll around as long as you like. You'll just tick him off when you're finally done.
