That Burning Sensation

pirates_burning_seaI’ve been feeling very MMO’ey lately. My wife and I have been playing a lot of Runes of Magic together online the past few months.  While the fantasy thing has its moments, we both have this nagging urge to try something new.

Tonight, I decided to take a stab at a free trial of Pirates of the Burning Sea. Unlike other MMO titles that often have you download a torrent client of some sort to download the game, Pirates pointed me toward this five part download of CAB files!  After I download all these files, then and only then can I begin installation.

Has anyone else seen anything like this for a game recently!?  Talk about a horrible first impression.

Actually, stuff like this is basically becoming the norm for PC gaming in general, not just with lazy MMO developers. A lot of titles require searching for patches, stupifying workarounds to make things work properly.

I bought Dark Sector recently and I was amazed that it crashed whenever you tried to change the resolution. It seems that the only way to do it is by changing the resolution in the .ini file and nowhere else. What the hell is that about.

I have heard good things about Pirates of the Burning Sea, and there is a dedicated crowd that plays it, but I believe the community has shrunk quite a bit from its launch. I could be wrong, but my last memory of the game was disappointment.

That's just stupid and is something that basically makes me think the nuts and bolts of the software — UI, configuration options, etc — is going to look like garbage. I mean really, there are freeware installer builders that you can use to not only put that stuff together but also I think you can split it up into chunks for those who can't download a single huge file.

If you can't make that front door actually look like a door instead of a series of caves with spray painted arrows on which one to walk through first, nobody's going to try it.

I leveled up my Rogue to 6 or 7 the other night on Indigo, by the way, but I have to go online and find the recipe for what skills a rogue should use before I assign any points.

Yeah you can grab freeware for software/game installers that compress everything for you as per your file structure and installs your .exe…everything. Weird!
