Nintendo Channel upgrade: stats and release dates!
In a typically sneaky move, Nintendo pushed out a serious Nintendo Channel upgrade today. The revised channel adds some slick new features that prove there’s some life in this old Wii yet. Here’s what I noticed:
- You now have the option for “high quality” movie playback. Good!
- The movie menu has a greatly improved interface, with rotating thumbnail images on each clip.
- You could always recommend Wii titles, thanks to the Nintendo Channel mucking about in your save files. Now you can recommend DS games… but you have to download a mini-app to the DS and you can only recommend the game cartridge that is currently loaded.
- There is a list of upcoming releases, organized by date.
- The Wii Menu icon shows thumbnails from the latest movies.
- A “Records” screen shows how many hours you have devoted to your gaming. As you can see, I’m about to round 100 hours on Animal Crossing. I’d like to know exactly how the Channel is getting this data, since it only lists me for four hours of Smash Brawl and I have played a ton more than that. Maybe it’s only counting from some recent firmware update?
Nintendo is also kicking off a new weekly show, Nintendo Week, where a host takes you through the latest and greatest. Sounds kind of like Pulse on the PS3. According to my Records screen, I already have twelve hours logged on the Nintendo Channel. This upgrade ensures I’ll hit a lot more.
