R.I.P PS2 Backward Compatibility

It’s over. It’s time to move on. PS2 backwards compatibility is dead.
“It’s not coming back, so let me put that on the table,” Sony’s John Koller says to Arts Technica with ‘an air of finality’. “It’s not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing,” he claims. “We’ve got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They’ve buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies.”
Hmm. I’m not convinced. My PS2 is nearly twice as old as my firstborn and, used and abused, (that’s the console, not my child – no need to call Child Services) I don’t know how much longer its going to last. Not to mention the space / aesthetics / omgiownagazillionps2gamesthatistillplay arguments. I’m annoyed that I didn’t buy a PS3 years ago but aforementioned child needed food and shoes.
We can still upgrade the hard drive – in fact, Sony “encourage it” – and if we want to change the OS, that too is okay. Linux was removed because Sony wanted to “standardise [their] OS.” The power button’s been moved to the front. The Spiderman logo is being replaced. It looks like it’s all change … well, apart from that backwards compatibility issue, that is.
You can read the interview in it’s entirety here. What’s your verdict?
