Pinnacle Station: Bioware Phones It In

Most people that come to Aeropause know that I am the Mass Effect junkie of the site.  I have bought it on both the 360 and PC, and have played through it multiple times on each platform.  Every playthrough has been a great experience, bringing new little nuiances and items that I have missed.  Have you ever looked out at the crater that Sovereign leaves on Eden Prime.  I had not either until my third time playing Mass Effect.

After its release we were touted with the idea of multiple DLC packs, expanding the universe that the Doctors over at Bioware had created.  Bring Down the Sky was a great start adding a new race of bad guys that we had only heard about in name and giving us the chance to take them on.  It had its flaws, but it added a couple of hours of gameplay, and it came in at a nice price.  Now comes Pinnacle Station, another DLC pack, but unlike the first addition, this one is a complete phoned in by the Bioware team.

Upon arrival at Pinnacle Station, I was expecting a little more than the normal derelict station that I had run into on several side missions.  However, this was not the case.  Beyond a few new items in the environment, and a couple of undeveloped characters, the DLC essentially boils down to a shooting gallery pack.  You have a simulator that gives you four types of missions: Time Trial, Hunt, Survival and Capture and three missions for each of these variants.

At first I played around with my crew, trying different combinations, but at the end of the day, this was an “Ashley and Wrex” mission pack.  If you use them, you will get through all the objectives without much of a fight.  There is no real depth to be had with this DLC pack, and at the end of the day, I feel like someone has come into my Xbox and lifted 400 Microsoft Loonies from my wallet.  It is a similar feeling to the Versus DLC in Resident Evil 5:  Uninspired at best, and flat out robbery at worst.  I cannot, in good conscience, recommend it to anyone at the 400 point price.  Free would have been a better deal, as it really adds nothing to the universe in any way.

Bioware, please take note: we want to get solid DLC that expands on the universe and builds on the great work of science fiction that you have created.  Gamers would be happy to pay for solid DLC that bridges the gap between the first and second Mass Effect titles.  Maybe this is something you are working on, but this DLC will probably spread a heap of bad feeling in gamers that went out and bought it.  Hopefully, a small portion of the gaming populace buy this, so a message can be sent to Electronic Arts and Bioware – more substance next time.

  • What the hell do you expect for 400 points? If they would have charged 1200 points or something I might agree with you, but its a cheap add-on that gives you a bunch of challenges to go through. It's not a new story add-on, and when they generically talked about it a while ago they said so. Its stupid to base hate on something because its not what you want it to be.

I would love to see some more story expanding DLC, and I am sad that Bioware has not put out as much as I would have liked, but I have no issues with this DLC. The combat in Mass Effect can be a lot of fun, and in a way this add on is kinda like adding on a Horde mode, which is a lot of fun. This DLC could have probably been free, but considering that they produced a game I would have paid 4X retail to play, I have no problem sending them 5 bucks.

If you really liked Mass Effect I would recommend getting the DLC because it is worth a few bucks. No real story, but plenty of fun for a few hours, or more if you really suck.

Do not listen to HIM.....SUPPORT GOOD DEVELOPERS!!!!
  • Support Good Developers. Like buying Mass Effect on not one, but two platforms. I have supported Bioware time and time again, but I call them like I see them, and it just seems no different than Samuel L. Jackson phoning it in for Deep Blue Sea. For all the hype they gave a month or so ago about DLC, this does not live up to that hype.

I would go so far as to say they put more effort into the Avatar clothing than the DLC. And Bring Down the Sky was 400 Microsoft Loonies, and was leaps and bounds better than Pinnacle Station. If Bioware would have packaged something like that, you would here me singing about how sexy awesome the two Doc's are at Bioware.

I think my issue is that the bar is set so high for Bioware products, and this just does not live up to their normal standard. Valve and Blizzard sit on a pedestal like that, and when the release something that would be good from most developers, it is less than normal for them.
  • What hype are you talking about? Bioware said barely a thing about this DLC. They didn't hype it one bit. All they ever did was casually mention it a while back. They might have some new awesome DLC planned before the new game, and they might not, but either way I have so far enjoyed putting back in my Mass Effect disc and playing some arena battles. Its not the best DLC ever, but its not a bad one.
  • Hey, if you enjoyed it, so be it. I just feel that for the price of admission, it is not worth it. And six to eight weeks ago, there was a lot of rumbling on Bioware's twitter feed where they were saying get ready for a big DLC announcement, and then said they said it was all shelved, etc. It made it sound like they had a pretty good DLC pack coming, and this pack did not put up to that announcement.

Also, I did not need this pack to go back and enjoy Mass Effect. I have played that game pretty regularly since it came out two years ago. It is played during my lunch break at times on my work laptop. I cannot get enough of the universe and making new combinations in my dialog choices. I have four characters, three of which are level 60. Two of those characters are on their third trip through the Mass Effect universe.

With all of that investment in the series, this DLC did not live up to the brand, nor the previous DLC.
  • "Its stupid to base hate on something because its not what you want it to be."

You mean like you foaming at the mouth because this article didn't say what you wanted it to? Personally I found this very useful - I've heard next to nothing on the new DLC so this overview was just what I needed. As much as I love Bioware and Mass Effect, I'm not going to give them a free ride - and my money - just because they did stuff in the past that *was* worth it.

Mass Effect is ripe for for universe expanding DLC that I would pay a lot more than 400 points for. Considering it's been out for 2 years, the results have been almost non-existent. You only have to compare with Fallout 3 to see that - Bethesda was rightly slated, and stung, by the Oblivion horse-armour fiasco. People didn't support them over that and Bethesda rapidly changed their mind on what people expect from their DLC.
