A New Games for Windows Live Client Has Emerged
Microsoft released a new client for their Games for Windows Live system that adds a couple of new features that were talked about at GDC earlier this year.
Starting today, game companies can use the Live service to store CD keys for games allowing the game to be installed anywhere, as long as the key is associated with your GFW Live ID. Companies can also set up in-game marketplaces, to replacing the separate, external GFW Live client for downloading DLC to your game. Finally, and probably the biggest for developers, is the ability to lock and encode a release until the day of launch, similar to the way that Steam can pre-load a game to your hard drive, holding the unlock and final files, for the day of release.
Missing from the new client was one feature that was talked about at GDC for GFW Live, and that would be storing saved games and settings to a storage cloud for your gamertag. That is a feature that would have really had a lot of value to gamers, as it is always nice to have our games stored on an external server so you can play on the go, or from your home computer.
