Weekend Gaming Score: Oh good heavens, what have I done?

Submitted by Stephen Munn on July 12, 2009 – 9:37 pmComments

Xbox green and black logoIt was a light weekend for gaming items, despite the dozen or so sales I visited yesterday and today. The big score I thought I had turned out to be not so much a great score as it was a good deal. The end result of this has me… well, a little on edge.

An unattended yard sale, which was really just a table with a couple of things on it, had my item. It was a complete, boxed, near mint original Xbox console. Black, two controllers, three games. No sooner had I approached it and looked at the price tag than the woman who owned the house appeared. The price said $30 for the system and $10 for the lot of three games. Thinking I could surely resell an Xbox in this condition, I asked if there was a way I could test it. She agreed, and her son hooked up the console to demonstrate that everything was how it should be while I made a trip to the ATM. She dropped the price to $30 for the system and games combined, and I came back with said $30. So, at this point I’m on my way home with an Xbox and three games, right?

The games that I have here are Sims Bustin’ Out, Shrek 2, and Halo. You’ll hear me joking in the upcoming podcast 90 (which was recorded the night before I bought this) that my most hated game and franchise are Halo, a game I’ve never seen more than a Red vs Blue video of, so let’s call that a starting point. I hooked up the system when I got home and poked through the green menus, then fired up Halo for a full system test. I need to make sure everything, including every button on both controllers, was working. I actually found the game surprisingly not terrible, and even felt an amount of disappointment that I wasn’t going to get to continue playing when I finished testing everything. Of course, aiming with a stick sucks, but that’s a given.

Having tested everything involved, I started checking online to find out what the resale value of an original Xbox is. It turns out, it’s not so good. While $30 for the console and games was a good deal, it wasn’t a resalable deal, which means I can’t expect to get more than $30 for it on eBay. The realization at this point that I had actually gone out and purchased a Microsoft game system on purpose, and perhaps for good, was starting to sink in. For those who’ve just joined us, I’m not a fan of Microsoft as a corporation or its products, and while the Xbox doesn’t have the reputation as a piece of crap the 360 has, I’m still wary of it.

I’m getting ready to move at the end of the month, and the Xbox is coming with us. We’ll see what happens from there.

Halo was the game that got me into gaming.

I had a Sega Master System and a Genesis when I was in grade school and middle school. I never gamed on consoles through high school or college (no Playstation, Nintendo64, or PS2). After I graduated college and was on my second job I bought an xbox and Halo after having played Halo at a friends house. I was addicted to that game. Great gameplay and great story.....the story was what really hooked me. I couldn't wait to get home to play and see what was going to happen next.
  • Eeew, an Xbox. That's dirt that never comes off.

Good luck scrubbing, Stephen. Don't wear your skin off...
  • Jordan_Snyder
Oh yeah? Well the Wii is mud that you accidentally absorb into your bloodstream that gives you a fatal virus!
  • Is it the T-Virus or the G-Virus. Or just Umberos. Holy crap I need to finish RE5 soon to get this out of my brain. Jordan, you are failing me now two nights in a row. I need to get out of the secondary bulkhead.
  • Man, that game is easy, c'mon man. I'm almost through it on professional. Great game though, one of my favorites this year right behind inFamous. Now that is a damned good game.
  • Dude, what difficulty are you playing on? I didn't think RE5 was this hard.
  • I haven't had any real "issues" until 6-3 while unlocking the bulkheads. I clear out the second bulkhead just fine, but when I open the primary bulkhead, those wasp things come out and catch me in the corner, slashing me to bits. So irritating. And I am playing on normal.
  • Oh, those cheap one-hit-kill guys. Yeah, they suck. I recall a lot of running from them.
  • Jordan_Snyder
It's always really late when you get on! East coast beotch! I'll see what I can do tonight, my friend.
  • Play KOTOR. It's an amazing game, my favorite game ever. I also enjoyed Star Wars: Battlefront II on the big black box, along with all the Halos.
  • Jordan_Snyder
I went back to play KOTOR recently and it doesn't hold up very well. After playing Mass Effect, you definitely realize all of this game's flaws.
  • Gah, I wanna go back and play it now, but I don't want it tainted. Oh the options!
  • I am going to have to disagree (listen to the podcast), because KOTOR is the best Star Wars experience ever. Better than all six movies, all the books, etc. And I stil enjoy it up to this day as one of my favorite games ever.
  • Jordan_Snyder
I still love the game because it was an amazing experience back in the day, but playing it today, the gameplay feels so archaic. I'm not sure I would recommend it to someone who hasn't played it. By today's standards a newcomer wouldn't be able to enjoy it like we did in the past.

Stephen: convert it into a XBMC (XBox Media Center) and play whatever media you want on it, especially since the PS3 is getting gimped in this arena now.
  • StephenJMunn
I haven't hit any problems feeding my iMac's HDD to my PS3 for media library functionality so far, I'll have to watch out.
  • All of that said in response to Name, I willl go out of my way to laugh at Stephen on next week's podcast!

But seriously, there are some great titles that you have missed out on. Halo is good on the console, along with The Warriors, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and of course, looking for sailors in Shenmue 2.

Also, while the console is ginormous, it is rock stable, and a lot of fun to play around with, and if you get adventurous, the modified OS's out there are pretty killer.
  • StephenJMunn
Yeah that's another thing. I picked it up and was like, is this a 1970s VCR?!

Then I set it on top of my PS3, and realized they are like, exactly the same size. Heh heh.
  • Nat_K
(I've been lurking for a long time since the comments system change)

Forget gaming with it unless you get say, Panzer Dragoon, Republic Commando, Crimson Skies, Ninja Gaiden, the Project Gotham games, KoToR, and a couple of other games.

However, XBMC is the way to go. Trust me on this. Add a larger hard drive and enjoy.
  • StephenJMunn
Thanks for popping in, Nat_K. Thanks for the information. I was hoping I'd get some of this, people saying "welcome to Xbox, you must play this game." That's what I was looking for.

That and some teasing because I bought an Xbox after all my whining about it.

That said, I'll pass on Ninja Gaiden because the Sigma games on PS3 are bound to be better versions. I am interested in KOTOR, and Panzer Dragoon.

Also, I'm a little apprehensive about modding my consoles, particularly if it's not an overclocking or feature adding thing.

Actually you should take advantage of it. I'm glad you finally gave Halo a chance. Bungie is a great developer but, we knew this from their Marathon Series on the Mac. (I personally have to admit I not a fan of M$ either but that's from being a longtime Mac user. The same feeling comes to me when my Yankees are playing against the Red Socks.) But I'll admit, the Xbox system did have some good games. Fable seemed like a interesting title. Also multi platform games like Fatal Frame Series are cheaper to buy for the Xbox than for the PS2. You should give them a try.
  • StephenJMunn
I'm a Bungie fan from the Myth games, and I've always been interested in Marathon. I would like to spend some more time playing Halo, though everyone I've spoken to seems to think the franchise declined in quality over time.

No kidding, I've been wanting to say something for awhile but I thought perhaps I was just crazy. This site has a ridiculous Sony bias.

Heres something for the owner/editor of this site to chew on: Your WhoIS says you are based on Canada, so I will assume your target market is North American gamers. In North America, there are roughly 13 million Xbox 360's in people's homes, as opposed to as opposed to estimates around 6.3 million for PlayStation 3.

This isn't intended as a measure of "which console is better" - they both clearly have their merits, but doesn't it seem like you are aleinating a large number of people from this site?

I'm not attacking Munn directly, as his post just kinda got me thinking about it, but many many posts here seem to be aimed solely at Sony gamers, with Xbox posts being further and further in between.

Its cool if you want to talk about how much you love PS3 - Its a great system, I used to own one - but seriously, balance it out and at the very least perhaps not say things like how unfond you are of Microsoft and Xbox (and then fail to give any damn reasons for saying that)
  • InfinityDevil
I think right now the PS3 news is more interesting than the Microsoft news. Sony's got a big uphill climb and they're continuing to get very close scrutiny in the enthusiast press.
  • And don't forget the 24 million Wii owners and 35 million DS owners in North America! By pure numbers we ought to be focusing on Nintendo.
