Watchmen PS3 Game and Movie Bundle Is Out

watchmen-the-end-is-nigh-the-complete-experience-blu-ray-ps3-150x150There’s a new game on the shelves today which bundles the two The Watchmen: The End Is Nigh downloadable games from the PSN together on one disk and The Watchmen blu-ray release on the other. There was some confusion about whether the games would be on the same disk as the movie, or if the movie would be the Director’s Cut or not, or if the movie would even be a blu-ray release. Even our own Joe Fourhman struggled to understand the multitude of options on his blog recently.

This release looks like a regular PS3 game box as you can see. It does, at least according to HD-Report, contain the Director’s Cut with 25 additional minutes of footage cut from the theatrical release, and this is a two-disc release with the movie on one disc and the two games on another. The second game, incidentally, will be released on the PSN (and Xbox Live) in a few weeks.

Initial reports indicated that this would be a hybrid release with the games and the movie on the same disc, so I’m a little bit disappointed that this isn’t what happened, but taking a step back from it it’s easy to see that would be very inefficient. Plucking the standard blu-ray off the shelf and packing it into what amounts to a standard game release makes much more sense from a production point of view.

I’ll be hunting for a rental of the Blu-ray of this next week when friends come by for a movie night. Netflix is reporting a “Very Long Wait” on the DVD version alone.

On a side note I did see the Watchmen movie in the theater without knowing anything about the story, setting, anything, and I enjoyed it greatly. I've since read almost the whole graphic novel.

While it had its faults, I did appreciate the film for what it was, an pretty decent book to film translation. I did not think the ending was as screwed up as some fans did, but it was a departure and change from the book. But overall, I really enjoyed the film. I am, however, waiting for the Super Ultimate edition that is set for Christmas that is going to be a whopping five hours in length.

Hurm. Although it is good to know that the End is Nigh package comes with the director's cut, I'm still not cool with paying an extra $25 for the two largely abysmal Watchmen games.

More confusion: the “digital copy” that comes with the Director's Cut Blu-Ray is actually for the standard theatrical version, not the Director's Cut version.
