Media Molecule teases LBP enhancements without saying anything

Submitted by on July 28, 2009 – 8:10 am5 Comments

lbp-1millMedia Molecule mastermind Mark Healy told VG247 that LittleBigPlanet will transform “into more of a versatile creation tool.” He admits that much of the DLC to-date has been cosmetic, but promised that fans of the game would be “very happy” at what is coming down the pike.

Of course, he doesn’t say specifically WHAT he means by a “versatile creation tool,” but if thinks fans will be happy I’ll be glad to follow him down the rabbit hole.

In the meantime, LittleBigPlanet has had plenty to crow about lately. The game reached one million user-generated levels last week, which, even if you subtract the crappy ones, that’s still a hell of a lot of UGC. And in the wake of the San Diego Comic Con, it was revealed that both Marvel Comics and inFamous costumes will be headed towards your DLC coffers.

But please, Mark, let us in on the secret soon, ok?

I've only touched the surface of this game and only tried a couple user-created levels. What is crazy is the amount of hours people must put into creating a level as it can get quite laborious.

Laborious doesn't explain it. I haven't gone back to the user creation tools since I did it for the Beta. After spending hours just 'learning' the tools and unlocking them, even with a good idea or two, I still can't get enough energy collected to sit down and turn out a level. It would be nice if there was an offline tool for creation, using say a PC and mouse/keyboard, with linux support ;) .

I played through one of the levels that our own Fourhman made and I realized that I would never want to take the time to create a level in LBP. I am happy some are enjoying it, but I just don't have the time to create something like that. ModRacers seems to make track creation easier than Trackmania, which might hold more promise for me.

1m levels with 244m playthroughs is really an amazing feat.

Morphiend I think the tools are rather good, probably significantly better than when you used them during the beta.

I for one would love to make more levels, mostly for my kids. They've been really, really patient waiting for me to do it.

I think my next level will be a revamp of my Balloon Playroom level I made for them to jetpack around and grab and throw floaty-material balloons at each other. The side game they came up with is grabbing the floaty items, drag them out of the room, and then throw them up to the sky so they go out of reach of the tethered jetpacks.

The unlimited lives checkpoint is really, really kid friendly. I'm glad that was a freebie.

And also, they haven't yet delivered on the online co-op create mode patch they promised, but at this point I'm not sure they'll be able to do it for LBP 1 if it's taken them this long.

If you want a children friendly level, please try my level Kid's Easy Fun – Beginner, PSN_ID NickLaslett. I made it for my two children (7 & 5). It is fun to play and easy to complete.
