Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

  • For me I think that Sony and Microsoft had very similar press conferences. I can't really pick a winner between them. They both showed a lot of cool stuff. Its gonna be a great holiday season with all these good games, its almost too much. I better start saving now!

    Disney in LittleBigPlanet! Awesome!

Just so you know, they showed costumes for Cinderella and Jack Sparrow.

In the end, I think everyone had a stellar conference, with Nintendo bringing out the big guns with Super Mario 4 with four player co-op and Metroid, developed by Tecmo. Does this mean that Samus will have triple D cups is anyone's guess.

Sony started off decent, but really pulled out the big guns with Final Fantasy XIV as an exclusive, God of War 3 looking fantastic, and Gran Turismo on the PSP as it will be a huge sized title for the platform. The Go received a decent reception, but I think Sony understands the cool greeting the hardware got as it is not all that different from the PSP-3000.

Microsoft hit hard with a lot of exclusive titles, something it has not done in recent memory, and did get a huge reception with The Beatles: Rock Band.

All in all, I was really happy with all three and the newly focused E3 really seems to have invigorated the big three in regards to presentation.

I love how everyone cheered anytime Hannah Montana was mentioned. Jack Tretton did a great job of hosting the conference, and played off the press leaks very smoothly. Now, onto Sony's showing.

They started off very nicely with Uncharted 2 and M.A.G. It started to peter out a bit, but not for long; not by a long shot. There were a bunch of killer announcements as well as demos. Assassin's Creed 2 had an awesome showing, a huge shock in FFXIV was announced, the new PSP Metal Gear game was shown, we saw basically the same Team Ico footage, and last but not least, God of War III was demoed, and it looked amazing.

Another pretty big showing was the motion controller tech demos. That wand prototype is basically what the Wii Remote should have been at the Wii's launch. It has a lot of promise, as does Microsoft's Project Natal, but the two devices are completely different. I can't wait to see what developers can pull off with this technology.

  • What I think is interesting is that at any time either side could mod their system to be more like the other one. Sony could develop a full body system and maybe MS could make some Peripherals that work with the Natal to do the stuff Sony showed. I think Sony might have been wrong to show so much because now MS can retool Natal and make it even better with the inclusion of more features.

Just watched parts 1 and 2 of the conference (in Home, blech). Assassin's Creed 2 did look pretty sweet. Loved Uncharted 2.

Didn't really care about much of the PSP stuff (except Metal Gear), but I guess it's nice that somebody at Sony remembered that the PSP exists… it wasn't that long ago that the PSP looked DOA.

Noted that Katamari showed up during the PSN section, so there's one dangling question answered: Karamari as PSN game, not retail release.

  • JoeFourhman says:

Also Mr. Incredible. Man I hope there's some Disney levels, creation items and sticker packs to go along with this.

  • JoeFourhman says:

Now have seen part 3… Impressed by the level creator in ModNation Racers or whatever it's called. That went from “don't need another Mario Kart clone” to “crap, I wonder how many building options that level editor provides”.

It was nice to see Sony's motion control actually demoed live, but I'm still not interested in jump-around-the-room games.

Still not enthused about God of War 3. I laughed when they showed the big icarus wings flop out of Kratos… was that in #2?

The new Ico project looked great, what the heck was that giant chicken dog thing?
