Windows Live Anywhere Might Still Exist
Okay, lets take a trip in the Wayback Machine to a few years ago, when Microsoft was touting their Windows Live Anywhere initiative. You guys remember that. Achievements, games and video spanning across the PC, Xbox 360 and Zune platforms. It sounded ambitious, and as we went along in time it became apparent that Microsoft would not pull of this huge synchronization of platforms.
What do we have to show for the attempt. Well, the Xbox 360 has all the pieces with a video and game store online, along with networking capabilities. The PC received Games for Windows Live, which does sport achievements, but the support by developers, and Microsoft for that matter has been spotty to horrible at best. And we won’t even mention the fact that the Zune has been a non-starter beyond allowing people to buy Marketplace points in 100 point increments, reducing the unused points you have sitting around.
So, Engadget has a little article that talks about how a new device will be unveiled by Microsoft at E3 that will be a Zune, but will allow you to sync up with your Live accounts. In theory, it sounds like if you buy a video on the marketplace on the 360 or on the PC (if the functionality ever develops), you will be able to send it to the Zune. Same with XBL Arcade games. If you have Space Giraffe on the 360, it can transfer to the Zune device. Currently, the code name for the device is “xYz”, but all of this is speculation at this time.
That said, it would be nice to see this happen, and we will be at E3 for the Microsoft press event, so it would be assumed that this will come during that event. Check back then for more details.
