Might & Magic Clash of Heroes Announced

campaign_mode_3Ubisoft announced the development of a new game in the Might and Magic franchise, entitled Might and Magic Clash of Heroes.  Looking at the screens, it seems that Ubisoft has taken the Might and Magic name, applied it to this game, and thrown the rest out, as it looks like something completely unfamiliar to the Might and Magic universe.

First off we have the manga style that has never been used in any of the Might and Magic franchises up to this point.  While that is not a deal breaker, and it fits the type of style that is used for an RPG on the DS, it does feel weird for the long time Might and Magic player.  The bigger change is the combat system that looks like it might be some sort of Puzzle Quest type of battle system.  I could be wrong, but in the combat screen you can find after the jump, it looks awefully similar to Puzzle Quest, which really seems to kill the brand.

I could be looking at the franchise with rose colored lenses however, as I grew up on the Might and Magic games on the PC, and this is something that is trying to go in a different direction, using the strengths of the platform that it is being developed on.  I guess at this point, I would just like to see a good Might and Magic game come out to remove the tarnish that was put upon the franchise with Might and Magic 9.

UBISOFT® CREATES NEW MIGHT & MAGIC® EXPERIENCE FOR NINTENDO DS PLAYERS

Might & Magic® Clash of Heroes® to Launch Worldwide in August 2009

SAN FRANCISCO – May 13, 2009 – Today Ubisoft® announced that it will launch a new title in the Might & Magic universe. Might & Magic Clash of Heroes, a puzzle RPG that was developed by Capybara Games, creators of award-winning handheld and mobile games, will be available on Nintendo DSTM and it will be released in August 2009.

Through five unique and epic quests, players will alternate exploration and turn-based puzzle battles in the game to save the world of Ashan from demonic chaos. Might & Magic Clash of Heroes also adopts a brand new manga-style art design that is perfectly suited to Nintendo DS. In a world populated by knights, elves, wizards, necromancers and demons, gamers can manage their own hero, customize their army and lead campaigns in the mythic Might & Magic world.

“Our fans have always appreciated the depth and richness of the Might & Magic universe,” said Romain de Waubert de Genlis, senior producer at Ubisoft. “The teams at Ubisoft and Capybara were inspired to extend that universe in a unique way onto the DS, creating an engaging new game experience.”

Created for Might & Magic fans, while also attracting new audiences, Might & Magic Clash of Heroes can be played in solo mode or shared with a friend in two-player peer-versus-peer mode.
