Last week Konami Online rep Brandon Laurino stopped by the PlayStation.Blog to announce some enhancements to Metal Gear Online, both free and paid. First of all, I’m shocked Konami is still supporting MGO, so kudos to them for that. For those who bought the recent SCENE expansion set, there’s a new game mode that involves player teams protecting those cute frog and duck statues that littered Metal Gear Solid 4. And for those who have not bothered to pony up for the paid expansions, there’s a very interesting super soldier add-on coming called “Patriot.” The Patriot feature randomly selects players to receive a serious weapon buff: “a 5.56mm Hand Rifle with infinite ammunition and no reload.” If you get the Patriotization, you can expect to be fully dominating in your MGO games for about a week, when the game will choose a new round of players to receive the Patriot boon.
The SCENE perk arrives May 12; Patriots will begin appearing in MGO starting May 26. But what I found most interesting was this tease at the bottom:
Stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks, as the one-year anniversary of the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4 approaches, we’ll be revealing even more awesome stuff to celebrate!
So how would you like Konami to celebrate MGS4′s anniversary? I’d say the best odds lie with more content to keep MGO peppy, but it’s never too late to ask for a Metal Gear 4 Trophy patch, right? How about new editions of the long-abandoned Metal Gear Integral podcast? A better interface to the in-game MGS4 screenshot browser? Old Snake in Pain? Another round of LittleBigPlanet levels? Free eggs benedict at your local Denny’s?
Since the announcement was teased on PlayStation.Blog, I think we can safely rule out a surprise 360 port, snark snark.
