Aeropodcast #80: The One With Philip Kollar

Submitted by on May 4, 2009 – 11:54 am4 Comments

super_phil_kollar_twitter_normalWe are back after a horrible week of technical difficulties, which included infusing the site with a ton of Xbox 360 news and PC news after the abboration that was the WiiCast two weeks ago. But due to your patience, we managed to secure some time with Philip Kollar, former 1up.com writer and RebelFM host. Philip discusses his new job at Current.com and how they are infusing writing into a new gaming section of the site at www.current.com/gaming.

Our topic this week discussed achievements and why some people feel the need to cheat to get them. While we started there, we also looked at the validation of achievements and trophies and how they tend to shape our gaming habits occasionally.

In the community section we are asked who the mysterious figure is that is Shane Whitehouse by jrittmayer and we pointed out the great reviews and other write ups that we had on the site for the past two weeks. Finally in the news section we look at Street Fighter IV supporting GFW Live, a Mass Effect iPhone preview and Prince giving the thumbs down to Activision on inclusion to Guitar Hero.

Again we want everyone to visit the website at www.aeropause.com, send email to tips@aeropause.com and visit the forums. Also make sure to review or rate us at iTunes using the show links. Music is provided by Revolution Void at revolutionvoid.com and is mixed together my our master of mixology, Stephen Munn.

This episode should have been used as an intervention for Haygood.

Me: “Joe. This is a safe environment. The first step is admitting that you have a problem.”

Haygood: “NO! IT WAS MY KID! I CAN STOP WHENEVER I WANT! GIMME MORE AVATAR! I PLAY IT CUZ IT'S FUN!”

When you guys were talking about your most proud achievement, one definitely came to mind for me. I got the “Mile High Club” achievement for Call of Duty 4, which took me over 20 tries. The achievement is for beating the epilogue mission on Veteran difficulty. I was so shocked and proud after I unlocked it. Eventually, I beat the level AGAIN using only my pistol and flash-bangs, but alas, there was no achievement for that. I remember Infinity Ward released the percentage of people who had unlocked that achievement, and it was 2.8%. I feel very special to have earned this since millions of people own the game. :)

Great show as always guys. Hey Haygood, picked up L4D on steam last week during that sale. Now, found out my vid card couldn't play it, but the new one is coming in the mail on Monday. If you ever want to play, just letting you know there are a few of us out there still gaming in the PC world.

Same goes for Team Fortress 2.

And glad to see the site is back up and running again.
