Ubisoft Announces Red Steel 2

Submitted by on April 29, 2009 – 1:56 pm20 Comments

rs2The first Red Steel came out at, or near the launch of the Wii, with much pomp and circumstance.  It was suppose to show off what could be done with a high action title, with mature and violent theme.  However, the game was received with less than ethusiastic reviews, and some felt the game was a huge letdown.

Ubisoft has gone back to the drawing board, and announced today that they are indeed making a sequel to Red Steel, and that the game is set for a fall 2009 release date.  Along with the announcement they included the following teaser shot for gamers to examine.  I don’t have any clue as to what Ubisoft is trying to show off in this image, but you can go to the jump and click on a thumbnail to see the image in full size.  Also, we have a small press release that does give us a bit of info, but not much.

UBISOFT® UNSHEATHES RED STEEL® 2
Sword-and-Gun Action Fighting Title to Return at Holiday 2009

SAN FRANCISCO – April 29, 2009 – Today Ubisoft announced Red Steel 2, exclusively for the Wii(TM) system from Nintendo. Red Steel remains one of the most successful Wii titles and the only brand created specifically for the launch of the platform. Red Steel 2 is being developed by Ubisoft Paris and will be available for the 2009 holiday season.

Red Steel 2 returns with an artistic style and flair created just for Wii. Set in a desert-bound, high-tech metropolis, Red Steel 2 is a revolution in the action-fighting genre, taking full advantage of the capabilities of the Wii MotionPlus(TM) accessory. Your movements are faithfully replicated on-screen, putting the emphasis on swinging, shooting and fun! With the ability of the Wii MotionPlus to sense the strength of a swing, you will literally be able to make an impact on your adversaries through power and precision.

“Red Steel was a unique opportunity for Ubisoft to work in tandem with Nintendo to create a title exclusively for the launch of the Wii console,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing US at Ubisoft. “Red Steel 2 is another milestone for the company as it is the first Ubisoft title with full Wii MotionPlus integration.”

Just as Red Steel broke ground as the only third-party brand created for the launch of the Wii, Red Steel 2 will be the must-have game of Holiday 2009 for those who wish to stretch their own capacities and fully experience a game that was built from the ground up to take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus.

More details on Red Steel 2 will be revealed in the June issue of Nintendo Power magazine. For more information on Red Steel 2, please visit www.redsteel2.com.

The only problem I had with the first game was the sucky sword-play. They could use the Wii MotionPlus to make a totally kick-ass shooter. I'm definitely looking forward to this one.

The best thing you can say about Red Steel is that you can currently get it bundled with No More Heroes in one box. So you can play No More Heroes and use the Red Steel disk to clean the grit off your frying pan.

Oh, puh-lease! You're even a Nintendo fanboy and you're dissing the game! :P

This game, while over-hyped, wasn't as bad as most people thought/said it was. The story and swordplay were iffy, but everything else felt fine.

Have to agree with Joe, the controls can be held up as a perfect example of how *not* to do Wii shooters and games in generals. Too many gestures to remember for simple things like reloading and, worse, aiming that usually had you looking at the ceiling or the floor for most of the game!

While we may disagree about the controls, I think we can all agree that the time-stopping targeting feature was pretty awesome.

Why would I want to ruin a perfectly good pan with Red Steel. I mean at least let me use something decent like Jillian Michaels Ultimate Fitness or Wii Fit.

I see I've met the founding fathers of the exaggeration committee. Red Steel was not that bad!

Joe, it's definitely not as bad as some of the games you play for “achievements” or “for your son.” No amount of achievements can make up for Cars, Monsters Vs. Aliens, Kung Fu Panda, etc.
