Six Days In Fallujah Looking For A New Publisher

Submitted by on April 27, 2009 – 1:17 pm5 Comments

iraqi-insurgentsIt seems that Konami could not handle the heat from all the controvery and criticism running around their decision to publish the game, “Six Days In Fallujah” by Atomic Games.

From the moment the game was announced, Konami immediately started receiving criticism from people wondering if it was wise to hit on an event that is still recent in many minds.  Criticism only got worse when the CEO of Atomic Games announced that it was consulting with not only US Marines, but with Iraqi Citizens as well as insurgent fighters that might have had a hand in killing US Marines.

All of the heat coming from the endless streams of controversy, which we looked at in Aeropodcast 79, was just hurting the Konami brand and the ability to get a fair shake on the content in the Six Days In Fallujah.  To end with a weird spin on things, it seems that US Marines and US Army soldiers that were asked about the game did not seem that upset by its concept.  All of them just hoped that it presented the events with dignity and respect.

I think there should be at least a one war buffer zone if you're going to make a war-themed game. It's way too early to make this game, especially since the war is still going on. I think it will be a couple of years before people are fully comfortable with the idea.

Go play Kuma/War then. It's been around for a while now (including a sequel), and it uses very recent events as the actual game missions.

I don't think a buffer is needed on most events. Some events have certain stigmas surrounding them, but does that mean we should ignore its existence? Did the Holocaust not happen? Do we need a game that re-creates the Holocaust? No, but a game that was around WWII and had concentration camps, etc. is perfectly acceptable.
