Gamestop asks that you trade in your PS2 to save $100, but there’s a better way
I’d like to talk about an offer that’s just hit my email box. Gamestop is offering $100 in trade credit toward a new 80GB PS3 if you trade in your PS2 and three PS2 games, as long as you have every component of your PS2 (like the cables and controller and such) and all three of the games are worth at least $2.00 in trade credit… which may be harder than it initially sounds, but I won’t get into that.
This is not a bad deal at first glance, but the new 80GB PS3s have no PS2 compatibility, which means when you upgrade, you’re abandoning that platform completely. I’m not the right person to be making this argument, since I already own a PS3, but as a strong advocate for backwards compatibility, I don’t think this is necessarily the best way to save on a new PS3. If you want to save $100 on a new PS3, take Sony up on their offer. Go to sonystyle.com and apply for a Sony credit card. If you use that new card to buy a PS3 (and do so when applying for the card) they’ll credit you a $100 rebate on the purchase. This is an offer that’s been running since the launch of the console… just ask Paul, it’s how he got his.
Check out Gamestop’s offer here, and Sony’s here. Think about it. It’s the same price for the same thing, but you get to keep your PS2. Images of the offers are below.
