As soon as I found out that the demo for Wanted: Weapons of Fate was releasing on the Xbox Live Marketplace, I added it to my download queue. I found the movie to be a great action film, complete with a good story, and some awesome bullet mechanics. It didn’t hurt that my favorite movie gal, Angelina Jolie was in it either. So I got home, turned on the Xbox, and let the 1GB demo download while I had me some barbeque for dinner.
When I got back, I fired up the demo and skipped the tutorial, and went straight to the gameplay. The Wanted demo has you moving from the cargo area of a plane to the front of the passenger section, all while being assaulted by terrorists. I assume they are some form of terrorist, but they never really state who they are, or why they are trying to kill you. You also do not play as Wesley Gibson in the demo, but as his father, Cross.
Wanted plays out like a cover mechanic shooter. You are always looking for the best bit of cover, where you can pop out and fire on the enemies location. However, they spiced it up a bit with a few new twists. First off you can stream your cover jumps together, confusing the enemy. I noticed that if I moved forward from cover to cover, the enemy would lose track of me, firing on my old location, allowing me to advance and kill the opposition. Also, you earn adrenaline which allows you to slow down time to get off some critcal hits while moving from one point of cover to another.
The biggest mechanic for the game has to be bending bullets. And I had all kinds of problems with it, until I finally went into the tutorial. Once you play through the tutorial and learn how curving bullets works, you will always be looking for the guy buried deep behind cover and nail him with a well placed shot. The curving bullet mechanic works great, and is pretty simple to use. It does add some thought to your shots as you now do not need a direct line of sight to hit someone.
The two biggest beefs I have with the Wanted demo is that we downloaded 1GB of stuff and did not feel like it was worth the size of the demo. Secondly, the graphics look a bit dated. They are not bad, but they look a bit dated, and enemeies seem a bit too cookie cuter and bland. However, the demo did what it was suppose to do, and that is whet my appetite for the full game.
