Steam Jumps On the Paid DLC Bandwagon

Submitted by on March 17, 2009 – 12:32 pm2 Comments

steam-logoSteam announced the addition of the ability to add paid DLC to games offered on the service.  The latest update to the Steam client now gives software developers a path to add additional content to any of their titles at a premium cost, not unlike console marketplaces like the Xbox Live Marketplace and the Playstation Store.

And with the announcement of the ability to add DLC, there is already one company that has started to use the new service.  Twisted Pixel, developer of The Maw, has already added two new levels for The Maw at a cost of $1.25 per level.

The announcement from Steam also makes mention of the fact that the DLC can be added to any game whether it was purchased at retail, other digital service or Steam.  Looks like the days of unlimited free DLC is coming to an end for the hardcore PC faithful.
