i thought it was just retail ps3 releases that had to have trophy support?

    Looks pretty straightforward.

Excerpt from articles: “the rule only applies to new products, which means only games that are submitted for approval after January 1, 2009. In other words, if a game is submitted for approval in December but releases in January, no Trophies will be required.”

So unless this one has been sitting on the back burner since December (or before), it better damn well have its Trophies.

The PS1 games won't have Trophy support since they're nothing more than ROM images, but in this case since its a PS2 game, and since all PS3's don't have PS2 backwards compatibility, it's not like they are just sending an image to play. It's a whole gosh-darn game that had to be re-written to run on the PS3.

Well, if other new downloadable games on PSN don't have trophy support, then we will know for sure. I thought it was only retail games that it applied to.

The old/new game thing does create something of a quandary. At the same time, PS1 games released on the PSN won't have trophies. Regardless of whether they're running natively on the PS3, they're still an old game.
