I bought Warhawk on ebay and it didn't come with a headset, so I went out to Best Buy and bought myself one. I use it a lot, but as mentioned most of the people don't have them. I tend to only friend request people who are fun to play with (usually worse than me lol) and have a headset. That way I know what they act like. The closest to being in a game with people that all had headsets was in Burnout Paradise, when I think, we had seven out of eight people with headsets.

So far I've only had one bad experience on the PS3: the other player did a search, joined me, lost, and dropped out before I was awarded my "medals" for the fight. Luckily it wasn't a ranked match, and I'd hope that Capcom has that covered.

Otherwise, I enjoy playing games with "random" people b/c that's how I've met some of the clans I've played in, as well as new people to hang out with. Out of all of my current local friends and immediate family, only a handful of my friends own a PS3. Playing online games with them provides for a rather shallow pool of options, especially when they don't play some of the same games that I do.

I use my USB headset which I purchased for recording the podcast. It works great. Still, I would never recommend playing video games online with strangers, and if I did, I wouldn't want voice chat. Playing LittleBIGPlanet with friends and family? That's a totally different story.

I have a headset and use it often with friends but rarely in a room of sniveling 12 year olds. (which is 99% of the time)

As I stated, you don't need anything special to have voice chat on the PS3. If you already have a Bluetooth headset for your cellphone, or a USB microphone (like from another game, etc [I got mine from Karoake Revolution]), then you have all you need.

It's nice that the 360 did come with a headset, since it required a special one: single jack for both microphone and earpiece.

Sony could have solved this problem two years ago by packing in a simple headset with the console, just like Microsoft did. With the Xbox 360 I could go online and chat it up on day one; now it seems that I've taken Microsoft's gesture for granted. I'm too focused on buying games to use my money for a headset. The only way I'll have headset soon is if I buy SOCOM: Confrontation or Warhawk, both of which are unlikely.
