Jarts is back! (sorta)

Submitted by Mike Koss on March 23, 2009 – 4:54 pmComments

jartsRemember this classic game? No? Not from the 70’s, huh? Well I do, and I’m not from the 70’s. I know you’ve heard all the stories about people being killed by the javelins. Well worry no more, oh faithful follower of the outdoor gaming, Jarts, aka Lawn Darts, is coming to you in the safe form of a stand-up arcade unit called Target Toss Pro and is being created by the people who brought you Golden Tee Golf, and Bags. I know you’re excited now. In which case, you can grab the full press release after the jump, or hit up their website.

The World’s Most Dangerous Yard Game Is Back! Lawn Darts Isn’t Lethal Anymore… It’s Just #!&@!*ing Outrageous

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., March 23 /PRNewswire/ — Banned for 21 years as the world’s deadliest backyard game, lawn darts is back — and coming to local bars.  Target Toss Pro: Lawn Darts brings back all the fun minus the risk inherent in flinging heavy metal spikes directly at loved ones.

Lawn darts is the love child of horseshoes and darts. The game is simple: heave foot-long javelins with aerodynamic fins into the air and hit the target on the  ground, preferably without impaling anyone. The game was outlawed in the  U.S. and Canada following several unfortunate accidents.

Now, thanks to Incredible  Technologies (IT) — inventor of Golden Tee Golf, the #1 all-time coin-op video bar game — pining lawn dart enthusiasts can finally get back in the swing.

One of the hallmarks of IT  games is their authentic commentary. (Golden Tee, for example, features the  voices of sportscaster Jim Nantz and golf legend Peter Jacobsen.) When scripting voiceovers for Target Toss Pro: Lawn Darts, IT designers found inspiration in fond memories of family gatherings past — a heady mix of barbeque, Budweiser, and the awe-inspiring expletives of beer-soaked Uncle Bill.

Hence, the game’s uncensored Raw Talk(TM) option, which spews colorful epithets with every shot. (Players have the option of disabling the feature before the game,  but we doubt many will want to.)

Lawn Darts, the second in IT’s series of Target Toss Pro games, follows on the heels of BAGS — a game so popular, it was recently spun-off into a home version for the Wii.

Lawn Darts accommodates 1-16 players and offers four modes, including Team and Tournament play. Players  can choose from four game formats: Classic Lawn Darts, 701, Cricket, and Poker Darts, and have the option of switching to BAGS as well.

Best of all, it only costs  $1 to play, so it’s truly affordable entertainment at a time we need it most.  Target Toss Pro: Lawn Darts…way more fun than a sharp stick in the eye!

  • In many ways, Jarts never left.
  • Its not lawn darts if someone doesn't have the off-chance of losing an eye. That is a fundamental part of lawn darts etiquette

Just like there's no croquet without the chance of someone losing a testicle? Or no ping pong without the chance of swollen welts?
  • Croquet is awesome...I miss that game.

We usually play croquet a few times in the summer. The obsession started in college with bbq's, drinking, and croquet in the big field across from a friend's house, then continued once those of us left in the area got a croquet set.

It's funny when you bring it up, because many 'older' people are like "young adults play this? I thought it was only for old people."

Bacci ball is another "old people" game that I love to play. Playing on the beach is so relaxing/fun.

Look if someone gets drunk enough, I think they can slip and hit their eye on the machine while trying to spin the ball.
