Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Crytek Shows Off Stunning Demo for CryEngine 3 on Consoles

Submitted by on March 27, 2009 – 2:24 pm19 Comments

Okay, I just got done watching the Crytek presentation of CryEngine 3, their new game engine, running on both the 360 and PS3.   I have to admit that I am amazed that Crytek found a way to shoehorn this engine on to the consoles.  All the footage was done in real time, and really looked like it could be a serious competitor for the premier engine on either console.

The walk through the forest, when you came upon the waterfalls sold it on me that Crytek has made an engine that completely trumps what Epic is doing on the 360 or the PS3.  And to Playstation 3 owners, I have to give a tip of the hat, because your footage looked noticibly better than the Xbox 360 versions.  Not a huge jump, but you can notice some more realism out of the PS3 segments.  I would have liked for Crytek to show the engine on the PC, but to be honest, this was about proving that they could create an engine that would run on the current generation of consoles.  Not only that, but the engine can scale to the next platforms as well, which could save them money in the long run.

No one is signed on for the engine that I am aware of as of yet, but I would have to think that Crysis 2 will come to the consoles this year or the next, and will use CryEngine 3 powered technology.

Did you get to watch a different trailer then we all did? I watched it about 4 times in HD and there was not what I would call a notable difference. They both looked pretty good, although whomever encoded that video did a horrible job.

So which of the two consoles is this running on, the PS2 or Wii?

  • That's what I thought! Nothing really mind blowing here at all. I mean it looks decent, but it doesn't look better then Unreal Engine 3.

I was teasing. I agree with him that the color and smoothing look better in the PS3 footage than the 360 footage, but without them being side-by-side and running on a TV, I can't really tell for sure. I thought the city scenes were pretty impressive, but they'd look a lot better on my TV. Hey maybe I'll download it and put it on my media server, watch it with my PS3 on my TV.

  • I thought the encoding was to bad to tell which one is smoother. The compressed it a bit much. Need to see for real running side by side.

Everything except for the forest/beach locales looked decent to me. Those two looked AMAZING. I especially loved the physics with the trees and blown up shacks.
