Unreal Tournament 3 Titan Pack A Free, Massive Upgrade, Adds Trophies!

Submitted by Paul Munn on February 19, 2009 – 9:24 amComments

ut3_whiteblotchy_330pxBeyondUnreal has announced what exactly will be in the Titan Pack for Unreal Tournament 3 and it will be — when it launches in two short weeks on March 5th for both PC and PS3 — a large and absolutely free upgrade to the game. Not only will it add Trophy support and bring in a formerly Xbox 360-exclusive feature or two to the PlayStation 3 version, it will absolutely pile on the new content and give our PC gaming pals some cool new features. Let us thank Epic for the following:

Update: A Midway representative told GameSpot. “The Titan Pack brings these features and content, in addition to many enhancements, to the PC and PS3 versions. Given the file size requirements for updates on the Xbox 360 platform, we have no plans to release the Titan Pack for Xbox 360.”

* two new game modes
* a new Titan mutator
* a whopping 16 new maps
* two new weapons, two new deployable items, one new powerup, and one new vehicle.
* two-player split screen (formerly an Xbox 360 exclusive feature)
* improved mod browsing support
* AI enhancements, networking upgrades, better menu and UI usability, better mod support

If the mod enhancements make good on the very old promise of a better way to bring in the 3rd party mods on the PS3 — the current method is pretty clumsy — I’ll be seriously excited about playing downloaded third party mods and levels again. This is a feature the Xbox 360 never got, unfortunately.

PC gamers get a handful of great improvements on top of that. The recent Steam integration gets even better with Steam Achievements in place of Trophies, and that’s not all. There’s also “Client-side demo recording, highly improved Server Browser, a new maplist system, plus mid-game mutator and gametype voting functionality for PC”.

Midway, the publisher of the game, might be circling the drain as it enters bankruptcy, but whether you’re a PC gamer or PS3 gamer it’s time to pick up this truly excellent shooter if you haven’t already. It’s as dirt cheap as another supreme value — Burnout Paradise — since it’s listed for at most $19.99 on all three platforms.

Wait, did I say three platforms? There’s no mention of the Xbox 360 version of UT3 on the March 5th release date, so you can look for a separate announcement of the Titan Pack for those who pay an annual fee to play online if and when Epic makes the deal to get it on the Xbox Live Marketplace. I’ve never seen this even suggested, so this is all just guesswork, but maybe the Xbox 360 version will get mod support now that they’ve hopefully refined how it works on the PS3.
