Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

Ubisoft has announced that they are ready to roll out the demo for their upcoming action flight game, HAWX.  The demo will be exclusive to the 360 for a couple of weeks, releasing tomorrow on February 11th, with the PC and PS3 demos releasing on February 26th.

The demo will give players the chance to dogfight other players, as well as attacking armored targets, amphibious vehicles and buildings.   The demo will also support 4 player co-op, and there are some special bonuses you can unlock after playing the demo.  The unlockables are three new current era planes, the Falcon F16A, the SU-35 SuperFlanker and the AH-8B Harrier.  Check the jump for the full details.

The GWJ conference call pooped on this demo pretty badly from a flight sim AND arcade excitement point of view. You apparently can't do a barrel roll. Strange eh?

I have no real interest in flight war games, though. I'd much rather see a very good version of Super Huey or SimCopter for the PS3. Probably will never happen, I know, but that's what I'd rather see.

First off, would it be the version of SimCopter with the controversial ending put in by an ex-employee with a grudge? Now, I would kill for a good Gunship sim or an F-15 Strike Eagle sim. Falcon 4.0 has been upgraded numerous times over the years to make it flight worthy, but I would love something with a different plane, but the same dynamic battlefield.

And if you heard my rant on the recent podcast, and my demo impressions, I pretty much laid a nut and corn filled turd on this game so far. I would even call the game Tom Clancy's Nut and Corn Turdfest at this point, because even that sounds more exciting than HAWX, which does not ROCX.

    Hah does not rocx indeed!

Did you play SimCopter to the end? The game was kind of strange in that the stringy polygonal little man and woman sims (this is pre-The Sims days) would make these exaggerated kissing sounds together. The controversy was that he made the male characters do that too, so it seems like he just flipped a switch on the character AI so that males would kiss males.

The graphics on them were so poor that it is hard to tell the difference between genders at any sort of distance, and several sims were always on screen, so it was difficult to pick out who was basically standing next to whom and triggering the sound effect. I never knew there was a controversy or that same-sex kissing thing until I read about it online.

They ended up patching that behavior out, which was fine. I still played the game like crazy. It even featured custom soundtracks if memory served since the chopper had a radio onboard that would play a few different stations of music and had funny ads. Just like GTA, but it predated modern GTA games.

I did not play it all the way to the end, because I could not use weapons on my Helicopter. Give me a SuperCobra or an Apache sim and I am ready to go. Oh, how I miss you Gunship and Apache Longbow. EA, please revive the Jane's series of games, and revive them before you made them suck.

I think they did have a helicopter with weapons in SimCopter, but it might have required a cheat code.
