First Thirty: Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection
I preordered Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection at Amazon, and it came in the mail yesterday. So far, all I can say is awesome, awesome, awesome. There is an incredible selection of games on here and they’re emulated far better than they were in the Sonic Mega Collection or anywhere else I’ve seen. They look great on my plasma set, and they sound just as terrible as they did in the early nineties. Er, that’s a good thing.
It’s hard to pull out a single best part from my initial experience poking around in Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star II, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Shining Force. Perhaps it was the lack of load times, something that was a ridiculous issue in Sonic Mega Collection. Perhaps it was the fact that the menus were attractive and easy to read. Probably, it was the moment when I had to stop playing and I realized I could just hit start and select “save game” to generate a save state, something that I would have loved in the earlier compilations. Who has time to sit through a whole game in one sitting anymore? If you’re not 12, you don’t. Now you don’t have to.
Check out the list of games on this, and if you like them, remind yourself it’s only thirty bucks. Still not convinced? Sit a bit and wait for me to try out everything, I’ll let you know what I think.
