Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

First Thirty: Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

Submitted by on February 18, 2009 – 9:59 pm15 Comments

SUGC_PS3_CvrSht_R9_HRI preordered Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection at Amazon, and it came in the mail yesterday. So far, all I can say is awesome, awesome, awesome. There is an incredible selection of games on here and they’re emulated far better than they were in the Sonic Mega Collection or anywhere else I’ve seen. They look great on my plasma set, and they sound just as terrible as they did in the early nineties. Er, that’s a good thing.

It’s hard to pull out a single best part from my initial experience poking around in Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star II, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Shining Force. Perhaps it was the lack of load times, something that was a ridiculous issue in Sonic Mega Collection. Perhaps it was the fact that the menus were attractive and easy to read. Probably, it was the moment when I had to stop playing and I realized I could just hit start and select “save game” to generate a save state, something that I would have loved in the earlier compilations. Who has time to sit through a whole game in one sitting anymore? If you’re not 12, you don’t. Now you don’t have to.

Check out the list of games on this, and if you like them, remind yourself it’s only thirty bucks. Still not convinced? Sit a bit and wait for me to try out everything, I’ll let you know what I think.

hmm phantasy star 2 i am actually trying to track down a complete copy at a descent price but i could cheat and just get this.sigh as nice as this sounds and looks i think i will keep looking.

  • Harshy says:

Oh get this collection. Phantasy Star 1, 3 and 4 are on there, too! Those 4 games alone are worth it.

  • Harshy says:

Stephen are you PS3 or 360 gaming this? Can you say trophy/achievement whore galore!?

  • StephenJMunn says:

PS3. I haven't earned any trophies yet, but yeah, there are lots of great ones.

  • StephenJMunn says:

Yeah, Harshy's right. Totally get this. All four Phantasy Star games, that's the #1 reason I bought it. That alone for $30 with save states is more than enough reason. Yes it's nice to have boxes (look at me with Castlevania games that are also on VC and Windows) but those Phantasy Star games get very very pricey, and since they're on two systems you'd need a SMS or power base converter… it's not worth the trouble if you're not a serious collector. Or get both. Own the boxes, then play them in 720p with crisp stereo sound. Nice.

  • Harshy says:

Golden Axe's is just collect 20 magic jars. Personally I'm working on getting the trophies first then going back and playing the games I'm interested in.

  • Wow, classic game collections are still happening. The whole Virtual Console thing made me kind of forget about those.

I'll tell you what – with the power of PS3 and 360, those things had better include EVERY GENESIS GAME EVER. I know it's $30, but…c'mon. Don't we already own most of these titles in some form or another, yet?

One thing that I'm pissed about is no Sonic & Knuckles on Wii Shop. And I want my lock-on for Sonic 3, or I'm not buying it. Bah!

  • william745 says:

ok i picked it up at newegg for$27.99 with free shipping for the ps3 i am slowly taking over my brothers ps3.

I think by now my affection for old Genesis games is long since spent. I do like the possessive “Sonic's” in the title though.

This seems like a great deal for Sega Genesis fans, but I wasn't even alive when it came out! Does that make some of you feel old? It just makes me feel young…

If Nintendo didn't have the Virtual Console I would buy almost every single N64 collection released, but thanks to the VC, I'll never have to.

I love my Genesis and if my TV would cooperate with it I'd hook it up and play right now… mmm.. General Chaos.

Does it make you feel young to say that I got the original NES when it started shipping with the SMB/Duck Hunt package?

And I picked up my Genesis when Sonic was the pack in, after deliberating between a Genesis and a Super Nintendo.

  • Jordan_Snyder says:

Actually, that makes me feel older for some odd reason. I never had the Genesis, but I did have an NES. Yes, both systems came out long before I was born, but I grew up with an NES and a collection of some solid titles (I actually have 2 copies of the SMB/Duck Hunt combo). I have absolutely zero memory of the Genesis, though.
