So I went over to Circuit City today after hearing that they had started to do the real markdowns. You know what I am talking about, how it takes a month or so for the real big markdowns to occur. Right now, they have DVDs and Games at 40% off, and accessories at 30% off.
With that knowledge in hand, I thought I would pick through the scraps that had been left behind. While the quality titles were gone, there was still enough of a selection for people to find deals, until you start to see that the markdowns are still way out of whack.
I did find a few items that made my trip worth it, but for most things, it was a monumental letdown.
I first went to the DVD section to see if they had a couple of different items in stock. I missed out on quality stuff like 30 Rock and others, but did find Painkiller Jane for $20.99, a $14 savings after the 40% discount. Also, if you own a lot of first and second season box sets but need later seasons in a particular series, now is the time to strike. A lot of series had sold their first and second seasons, but still had plently of later seasons like The Office, Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, Rome and Deadwood, to name a few. Most of the movies were marked up to their original list price of $21.99 or $29.99, making the 40% discount meaningless. Go for the box sets, but skip most of the movies, unless they are older titles that might end up with a decent cut.
Next was to the console section. I decided to peruse the 360 game selection which had a decent amount of titles. They still had a good selection of holiday titles like Far Cry 2, Prince of Persia, Mercenaries 2 and others. They also had bigger hits like SoulCalibur 4 and Devil May Cry 4, and a large selection of lackluster sellers. The problem is that most of these titles were jacked up to the full $59.99 price, so 40% off only puts them down to $35. Not exactly a huge savings. Even more tragic was finding games like Guitar Hero II and Two Worlds, titles that can be found easily at other stores for $19.99 to $29.99 selling at a full $59.99. Two Worlds has not been $59.99 in ages, and neither has Guitar Hero II. So you can get a deal on some games like the aforementioned Far Cry 2 or Prince of Persia, but really not much from other stores.
Now to the last stop of the day, which was the PC games section. I figured I would have a decent selection to play with here, and it was true. Big titles like Mirror’s Edge and Dead Space were gone, but I found at least two good deals, Sins of a Solar Empire for $20 after discount, along with STALKER: Clear Sky for $18. But as with everything else, there were some rip-offs as well. Mass Effect was found for the low price of $49.99. Lets see, that is $30 higher than anywhere else right now. They also had Quantum of Solace for $49.99, even though that game is selling for $29.99 at the Target and Best Buy right across the street.
Overall, I did leave with a few things, but overall, I was disappointed. When you go in expecting deals, you expect deals, but its seems that “Going out of Buisness” sales nowadays just means gouge as much as you can while you run to the finish line. I might go back to Circuit City in the final days of the sale, because I might be able to get Two Worlds marked down to $39.99 by then.
