“Bug” in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection

After learning of this excellent Genesis collection from Stephen, I swung by my favorite brick-and-mortar store and picked up my copy last night. Excited, I inserted the disc and wanted to hop in to some classic Sonic action. I scrolled down to Sonic, clicked start and the game fired right up. Whee! The classic SEGA logo appeared on the screen, but the voice saying it was faint, if not completely unnoticeable. Sonic pops into the screen and I quickly notice that there is no music playing.

I hop into the options screen, but can’t find any settings related to the audio output. The audio bleeps from the menu’s are being output properly, though. I checked my receiver and everything was fine, but the audio was just not there. My wife walks in, and comments that it sounds like its coming from my USB headset. After unplugging the headset, the audio instantly pops out of my 5.1 surround sound. Seems that SEGA fudged the audio output from games and between the PS3 firmware and SEGA’s software, the in-game audio will be output a headset if it’s connected. Hopefully no one else falls victim to what seems like a bug in the game.

Aha! I encountered a similarly confusing sound thing, but managed to figure out what it is. Here's what it is.

The music in the compilation is stereo only, and the sound effects are output to the surround speakers. So what happens is you only get audio from your surround speakers when there are sound effects. I figure this is a workaround of the fact that all the games were designed in stereo, so rather than remixing all of the audio in surround, they figured set up the emulation to divide up the audio this way.

Not the same as the issue you had, but interesting.

so basically if your using stero on your tv you wont notice this at all?

I wish there was firmware support for putting all sound through a bluetooth or usb stereo headset. I'd set it up that way all the time to avoid making noise at night.

For me, it was if I had a headset plugged in (don't know about Bluetooth, since I don't have one), the game sound only came out the headset.

I haven't experience any surround-sound mishaps since the game only outputs 2-channel stereo. I have my receiver setup to re-mix from 2 channels to 6.1, so once I got the sound actually coming out the audio output from the PS3, instead of my headset, the sound has been great.

    That would be pimp.

That's also a reason why my AV setup is in my basement. That way I can crank it pretty loud and the only area that's really affected is the master bedroom since its directly over top of that area in said basement.

I'm getting all the sound effects from my surround speakers and the music from my stereo speakers. My received doesn't remix the audio as far as I know.

The compilation's background music, which plays in the menus and at the title, is also in surround on mine.

Yep. I got this game back from a friend who borrowed it for half a year, decided to play some Sonic 2 and nadda. I did finally faintly hear the spindash sound and after reading this realized my USB headset was indeed plugged-in. I plan on unplugging it when I get off work. :) Thanks for this article! Can't wait to earn some more trophies!!!
