Predictions R Us: Another Tomb Raider Movie is Happening

Submitted by Joe Haygood on January 28, 2009 – 11:56 amComments

So we were talking about this very item on the podcast last week, that a Eastern European website had a crude artcile posted, talking about a new Tomb Raider movie that was going to happen.

While most would scoff at the idea of another Tomb Raider movie, Hollywood saw the $400 million in US domestic gross that the two movies brought in, not to mention great sales on DVD and solid performance in other countries.  That kind of money makes another trip to the Tomb Raider well a given.

The story that we talked about, was mention that Megan Fox was going to take over the reigns of the Lara Croft role.  Today’s story does not confirm this first rumor (I would watch, if she was in it), but it does give us some other details.  Paramount no longer holds the movie rights to the Lara Croft franchise, so they reverted back to Eidos.  Warner Bros. recently increased their stake in Eidos, which allowed them to gain the rights for another Tomb Raider movie.

The question marks start when Dan Lin talks about rebooting the character from the previous movies, giving her a new origin, new love interest, and her villian.  Yeah, this makes me want to watch.  While the Angelna Jolie Tomb Raider films are not masterpieces, I will say that they caught the feel of the Tomb Raider games rather nicely.  They fleshed out the story, but they used a lot of what was in the games as the basis of their character.  To take all of that away removes the whole premise of Lara Croft.  I hope this is just a metaphor for getting rid of the new stuff that the movies introduced to the mythos.

Personally, I would like to see them take Tomb Raider: Legend, and put that on the big screen.  It had a good story, lots of cool locations, and a more realistic Lara Croft.  It also lends itself to the perfect sequel, which is something that always piques the ears of Hollywood execs.  Oh, your welcome for the Megan Fox shot, courtesy of psxextreme.com.

  • Megan Fox would be awesome as Lara Croft, with her gorgeous but edgy look (tattoos a-plenty). And sure-as-anything she'll be brill in Transformers 2.
