Gametap Limits Its Free Game Catalog
For some time now, Gametap has been offering over 100 titles free of charge to play with their Gametap player. However, the good times seem to be ending, as Gametap is cutting back its free offerings to about 40 titles, starting Thursday, January 22nd.
Gametaop still mentions that they will have gold subscription titles that will be free for a week at a time, like Sid Meier’s Pirates is free this week, but the stream of top quality free titles will be coming to an end.
The reasoning for this cut is pretty obvious, which most likely equals not enough free players becoming paid subscribers. I am in that camp. I was a paying member of Gametap for over a year, but I just switched to free, because of the quality of the free games. Also, there have been questions over the financial stability of Gametap, and if it will last much longer. This seems to be a step in trying to produce more revenue for the gaming unit of Time warner/Turner. Click the jump to see a full list of the games leaving the free service.
