Fallout 3: I Brake For GOATs
I recently picked up Fallout 3 and unwrapped it after the more complete 1.1 patch showed up to allegedly fix a larger number of bugs than the 1.01 patch which also added Trophy support. I was stunned to run into a game-halting bug in the earliest part of the game — in Vault 101 itself.
I’d heard this game was buggy, but really, Bethesda, you couldn’t find and fix a game stopping bug within the first hour? This makes me more than a little bit fearful that I’ll run into something later on that might hang me up somewhere without knowing I’d hit a bug.
Here’s what happened.
Once you’re old enough in the Vault the day comes when you must take the G.O.A.T. test which is the game’s way of sussing out what kind of player you want to be so it can assign skill points accordingly to help you. You start the day talking with your father, so I took advantage of it to ask him all sorts of questions from those offered, exhausting just about everything on the list except for the attempt to try and lie that I was sick to try and stay home. I walked out the door to head to the classroom, ran into the Tunnel Snakes gang, and decided to confront the head guy directly. One fist fight later I had subdued one of the guys in his gang — I think his name was Wally — which triggered them to back off and made the girl they’d been hassling happy. I found my way to the classroom, took my seat as directed, and the test began.
Only it didn’t really begin. The others in the room took out their papers and scribbled away quietly while the teacher quietly stood at the front of the room. I panned the camera around. Did I miss something? I pushed buttons to try and get up or trigger something, to no effect. Was I supposed to pick up a test from the teacher’s desk? I couldn’t stand up now. I was stuck sitting in the desk. What the?
So I reloaded from an automatic checkpoint, skipped the conversation with dad, and opted to talk to one of the Tunnel Snake members and poke him until his pride led him to walk away from the others and dissolve the group. From there I went into the classroom, sat down, and the test started up. The projector started, the instructor picked up the question sheet and started reading, and the multiple choice mechanic for assigning skill points from answers to your questions commenced.
Given how the bug worked, I’m inclined to think this probably isn’t platform specific, but I could be wrong. Anyone else see this?
