CT Scan Volume 5: It’s a disappointing preorder bonus

Submitted by Stephen Munn on December 5, 2008 – 8:41 pmComments

Chrono Trigger is now out for DS, and my preordered copy came from Amazon.com with the bonus CD that we were all led to believe would only go to those who preordered at Gamestop. Now that such nonsense is behind us, let’s have a look and listen at the CD. Click on the image for a nice big picture of what comes in the little preorder sleeve.

Let me start by pointing out that Yasunori Mitsuda is, hands down, the finest musical composer in the gaming industry. I’ve listened to a lot of gaming music, and there’s nothing that approaches this guy’s brilliant work. Any amount of this on a CD is a great thing, particularly when being pounded out by an orchestra, and that’s what this is.

As gamers, we’re inclined to whine, so here’s what I’m going to whine about. This CD only has two tracks on it. One of them is two minutes long, and the other is four. Track one is an orchestrated version of the Chrono Trigger theme, and it’s four minutes long. Track two is an orchestrated medley of songs from Chrono Trigger. That one is only two minutes long.

That’s it. Just a two-track CD and some self-indulgent crap from Yasunori Mitsuda about how it’s been a long time since he composed this music.
