Activision thinks you would pay a subscription fee for user-generated GHTunes tracks

Submitted by Jeremy Yerby on November 5, 2008 – 5:47 pmComments

Before I begin this article I must point out that both Haygood and myself warned you on multiple ocassions: ITS A TRAP!

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, has been quoted as saying that GHTunes (the means of distributing user-created songs within Guitar Hero World Tour) “..may very well result in the newest subscription opportunity in our portfolio.” citing that over 25,000 songs having been uploaded to the service already.

Allow me to correct him: They see this as the perfect opportunity to charge you for someone else’s work. Do the creators of these tracks see any of the cash? Doubtful. Not to mention most of the songs sound like crap a glorified ringtone.

I get it: World of Warcraft is making you oodles of cash. That does not mean every game is suitable to the subscription payment base, nor will gamers tolerate you trying to monetize things for no good reason. It would be different if the game was free and that was their main means of making money, but we are already paying anywhere from $60-$200 to play this game…. but that’s the same thing I said about in-game advertising and we see how that turned out…..
